ADLER, 90, of Ypsilanti,
died July 17, 2012.
Dr. Adler embodied
the industrious and
creative spirit which
defined the Depression
generation. He was
admired by all those
c. 1940
who knew him: family,
friends and colleagues. He was a father
and grandfather, a professor and scholar,
an author and performer, an innovator
and mentor. Above all, he was a con-
summate gentleman who will be dearly

JOSEPH L. BALE, 88, of
Ventura, Calif., died
peacefully on July 18,
2012. He would have
turned 89 on Aug. 1.
Detroit-born, he
was the youngest child
of Minnie and Harry
Bale. Known as "Big
c. 1945
Joe," he was all-city in
basketball and baseball at Central High.
He attended college in Michigan and
Naval Midshipmen's School at Columbia
University. Lieutenant (JG) in World War
II, beach master on VJ Day in Yokohama
Harbor, Mr. Bale was past commander
of the Jewish War Veterans Michigan


Department and of the Bale Post (named
after his cousin "Little" Joe). He worked
in the furniture business until moving
to California in 1981, and then went into
newspaper advertising sales.
His greatest joys were his grandchil-
dren, Erin (Kristian), Zachary, Charlie,
Shirah, Ari and Yafa. Mr. Bale is also
survived by his wife, Trudy (Levine);
and children, Ron (Jan), Deni Jones
(Ken), David (Janie), and Andy (Snooky

MINNIE BERMAN, 98, of Waterford,
died July 16, 2012.
She is survived by her children,
Marcia and Charles Bennett of Oak Park,
Rosanne and Bob Bar of Boca Raton, Fla.,
Iry and Marcy Berman of Birmingham,
Helene and Earl Koenig of Waterford;
brother and sister-in-law, Sidney and
Bossie Gold of Farmington Hills; 11
grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren;
one great-great-grandchild.
Mrs. Berman was the beloved wife for
63 years of the late David Berman. She
was predeceased by six siblings:
