obituaries DR. RAPHAEL ADLER, 90, of Ypsilanti, died July 17, 2012. Dr. Adler embodied the industrious and creative spirit which defined the Depression generation. BALE, 88, of Ventura, Calif., died peacefully on July 18, 2012. He would have turned 89 on Aug. 1. Detroit-born, he was the youngest child of Minnie and Harry Bale Bale. Known as "Big c. 1945 Joe," he was all-city in basketball and baseball at Central High. He attended college in Michigan and Naval Midshipmen's School at Columbia University. Lieutenant (JG) in World War II, beach master on VJ Day in Yokohama Harbor, Mr. Bale was past commander of the Jewish War Veterans Michigan FRESH MARKET Department and of the Bale Post (named after his cousin "Little" Joe). He worked in the furniture business until moving to California in 1981, and then went into newspaper advertising sales. His greatest joys were his grandchil- dren, Erin (Kristian), Zachary, Charlie, Shirah, Ari and Yafa.
