Triple Play!

Megan Simmons is a star in three
high school sports.

Steve Stein
Contributing Writer

N

o matter how you slice it,
Megan Simmons had a
remarkable four years at
Cranbrook-Kingswood High School in
Bloomfield Hills.
She played three sports and won
state championships in two of them,
she was a school leader and associate
sports editor of the nationally recog-
nized school newspaper,
and she earned a presti-
gious award in art.
Outside of school, her
jobs included assistant
Hebrew teacher at Temple
Shir Shalom in West
Bloomfield, assistant hock-
ey coach and summer ten-
nis camp counselor. She
also performed commu-
nity service work such as
making dolls for children
in hospitals and knitting hats for child
cancer patients for Hadassah House.
The 17-year-old Bloomfield Hills
resident has a simple, two-word expla-
nation for how she managed to main-
tain such a busy lifestyle.
"Time management:' she said. "If
you know you only have a certain
amount of time to do something, you
get it done. Of course, when you love
doing something, you don't think of it
as work and you don't mind putting in
the time."
Simmons has played tennis most
of her life, and it was her top sport in
high school. In four years of playing
doubles, she won a state championship
and three regional titles, and she made
it to the state finals twice and state
semifinals once.
Her state championship came this
past season at No. 1 doubles with
partner Meg Phyle. They went 21-3
including a perfect 7-0 record in post-
season play. Cranbrook-Kingswood
won its second consecutive team state
championship.
"I was the team captain this year, so
I'm really proud of my team for win-

ning the state title," she said.
Back in 2010, when she was a soph-
omore, Simmons was a defenseman on
Cranbrook-Kingswood's state cham-
pion girls hockey team. She played
hockey in high school for four years.
Simmons was a solid volleyball
player, too, even though she was on the
Cranbrook-Kingswood varsity team
for only two years. Playing the libero
position on the volleyball team, she
was named its most improved player
in 2011.
She was Cranbrook-
Kingswood's girls
nominee in the Michigan
High School Athletic
Association's 2011-2012
Scholar-Athlete Award
competition.
As for student leader-
ship, she was elected a
class officer for three
years; she started a school-
wide anti-bullying cam-
paign; she organized an interactive
community service project that raised
money for presents for the Bottomless
Toy Chest organization; and she was
a Gold Key Student Ambassador who
gave guided tours to prospective
Cranbrook-Kingswood students and
their families at open houses.
Last, but not least, in art, she
received a gold key for her art port-
folio in the regional Scholastic Art &
Writing Awards. Less than 10 percent
of regional entries earn a gold key.
Simmons is headed to Washington
University in St. Louis, where she plans
to study architecture. Psychology and
education also are in the picture.
She plans to try out for the women's
tennis team there in hopes of making
the squad as a walk-on. There is no
women's hockey team at the university,
and the volleyball roster is full.
The daughter of Michael and
Stacey Simmons, Megan has a sister
Amanda, 15, who attends Cranbrook-
Kingswood. They were tennis team-
mates this past season.
