cooking healthy, local meals as simple
as preparing macaroni and cheese from
a box',' said Kresch. "Follow the direc-
tions, add some of your own ingredi-
ents and voila!"
One of Kresch's favorites is
Scarborough Fare stuffing, seasoned
with parsley, sage, rosemary and
thyme. "It takes less than 10 minutes
to prepare and is made with 99 percent
Michigan-grown ingredients',' she said.
The trio want to help Detroiters
reconnect with food grown in their
area while increasing business for
local farmers.
"We're eager to set up a booth at
Detroit's Eastern Market and other local
markets this summer," said Kresch.
As a "cottage food" business, the DBC
has to sell direct to consumers. The
goal is to grow and upgrade to a com-
mercial kitchen so their products can
be sold in stores.
DBC will not be kosher certified;
however, all products will be made of
100 percent plant ingredients processed
in a vegan kitchen, so they are 100 per-
cent parve, Kresch said.
Barth added that they intend to keep
prices affordable. A pizza dough kit
with enough ingredients to make two
pizzas costs less than $4. A hearty vege-
tarian chili kit will run about $8."Most
of our products are less than $10, and
many less than $5."
Kresch said that she is inspired, in
part, by her Judaism. "I'm motivated to
help people make healthy choices. It's
one of the ways I try to embody tikkun
olam in my daily life."
Adds Barth,"We're also invested in
Detroit. Our business reflects that."
As of now, DBC is amassing fans on
Facebook and using both social and
traditional media to get the word out
about their business. They're using
crowd-sourcing (Web-based public
funding) to raise capital to grow and
expand their business before its July
launch.
