Jon Barth and Marissa Kresch

Michigan-grown startup helps
Detroiters eat healthy on a budget.

Jackie Headapohl

Managing Editor

T

hree local Detroiters and
University of Michigan gradu-
ates combined their passion for
urban issues and healthy eating to create
a business: The Detroit Bulk Co. (DBC).
This food processing company will begin
offering healthy, delicious meals to farm-
ers' market shoppers in July.
Jon Barth, 27, was working on degrees
in public policy and urban planning at
U-M, where he met his girlfriend Marissa
Kresch, 23, and roommate Jordan Twardy,
26. They now live in Midtown Detroit.
"Originally, we met on JDate.com ,"
said Kresch, who grew up in Farmington
Hills and attended Hillel Day School of
Metropolitan Detroit through eighth
grade. "We both liked riding bikes and
went on several biking adventures. That
left us a lot of time to talk about our goals
and dreams."
Barth's dreams had to do with mak-
ing a positive difference in Detroit. "My
parents and grandparents grew up in
Detroit, and I feel a sense of responsibility

to repair the damage done by time and
people leaving," said Barth, who grew
up in Oak Park and attended services at
Congregation Beth Shalom.
Kresch, a vegan, was always interested
in food justice. "Food is central to com-
munity and to health. Due to inequality
and poverty, many people don't know
how to eat healthy."
That sparked the idea for their busi-
ness."We want to feed ourselves well. We
said, `Why don't we bring that to others?'"
said Kresch, who also is a cook at Seva
restaurant in Detroit.
The DBC aims to empower people who
don't have the time, money or skill to
make healthy, delicious food in their own
kitchens.
"Nobody seems to cook from scratch
anymore — instead we've seen a boom
in restaurant patronage and frozen/
canned food purchases. In an area with
high rates of obesity and heart disease,
these options aren't helping': said Barth,
who works as a community organizer at
the Center for Urban Studies at Wayne
State University.
Co-founder Twardy concurred. "When
a Big Mac is cheaper and faster than
a salad, it's hard to eat healthy when
money is tight. DBC is here to change all
that with a product line that is taste bud
and wallet friendly."
The DBC offers convenient and inex-
pensive products for even the most
timid cook. The product line, consisting
primarily of local and/or organically
grown ingredients, will also provide a
boost to Michigan farmers, they say.
All products have been tested out
on Twardy, who now works as director
of programs at the 8 Mile Boulevard
Association and is also interested in
Detroit's revitalization.
"If he can make it, anybody can:' said
Kresch, who laughingly recalls Twardy's
legion of cooking disasters at U-M.
"Our products are designed to make
