Artist Itzchak Tarkay

W

orld-renowned Israeli artist
Itzchak Tarkay unexpectedly
died on Sunday, June 3, 2012,
while visiting Metropolitan Detroit.
The 77-year-old
Holocaust survivor was
the featured guest at a col- (73.
lector's event at The Henry ''
hotel in Dearborn hosted
by Park West Gallery of
Southfield, his exclusive
art dealer. The artist felt
ill Saturday evening and
was taken to Oakwood
Hospital in Dearborn
where he underwent
Itzchak Tarka
heart surgery. He died on
Sunday morning.
Mr. Tarkay, whose works are strik-
ingly colorful with fluid figures,
was recognized as a "leading rep-
resentative of a new generation of
figurative artists" and was inspired
by French Impressionism and Post-
Impressionism, according to his biogra-
phy on the Park West Gallery's website.
He was born in 1935 in Subotica on
the Yugoslav-Hungarian border. Mr.
Tarkay and his family were forced into
the Mathausen concentration camp in
Austria in 1944, until the Allied forces
freed the camp in 1945. He and his fam-
ily immigrated to Israel, and, in 1951,

he received a scholarship to attend the
Avni Art Academy, where he studied
under the artist Schwartzman and was
mentored by other prominent Israeli
artists of the time.
Working primarily
with paint, watercolors,
drawing and graphic art,
Mr. Tarkay made studies
of women and land-
scapes that exhibited the
influences of Lautrec and
Matisse in addition to his
Israeli roots.
Park West Gallery's
founder and CEO, Albert
Scaglione, said, "Tarkay
was a kind and sensitive
man, a loving father and a gifted and
talented artist who loved to paint and
constantly worked at his art.
"He left a very special mark in the
world of art by sharing his gifts with so
many. His imagery has become a part of
our public consciousness!"
Itzchak is survived by his sons Adi
and Itai and their families. Hebrew
Memorial Chapel in Oak Park arranged
for transfer of his body to Israel for
burial. 0

She is survived by her beloved hus-

ESTHER M. (COHEN)
KUNIN, 94, died May
28, 2012, in Scottsdale,
Ariz., after a long strug-
gle with Alzheimer's.
She was born and
raised in Worcester,
Mass., the ninth of 10
children, and was the

last to survive. She spent her married
life in Detroit, where she worked with
her husband in his small manufactur-
ing business, which she continued to
run after his death. She then moved to
Scottsdale to be near her family. She con-
tinued to work in various retail jobs and
volunteered for many years for the Mesa
Public Schools, Scottsdale Healthcare
Osborn and Har Zion Congregation.
She was pre-deceased by her husband,
Lawrence (Larry) in 1970; they had met
at a USO dance before he was deployed to
the Pacific during World War II.
Mrs. Kunin is survived by her daugh-
ters, Shirley (Kunin) Stegman and Julia
(Kunin) Kelly; sons-in-law, Cary Jay
Stegman and Larry Patrick (Pat) Kelly;
grandchildren, Lauren Daniel Stegman
(Nicole) and Rachel Beth Stegman Ware
(John); great-grandchildren, Noah,
Jenna, Seth and Zev; nine nieces and
nephews and several "adopted" children
and grandchildren, who remember her
wonderful sense of fun and humor and
spot-on "imitations!'
