Artist Itzchak Tarkay W orld-renowned Israeli artist Itzchak Tarkay unexpectedly died on Sunday, June 3, 2012, while visiting Metropolitan Detroit. The 77-year-old Holocaust survivor was the featured guest at a col- (73. lector's event at The Henry '' hotel in Dearborn hosted by Park West Gallery of Southfield, his exclusive art dealer. The artist felt ill Saturday evening and was taken to Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn where he underwent Itzchak Tarka heart surgery. He died on Sunday morning. Mr. Tarkay, whose works are strik- ingly colorful with fluid figures, was recognized as a "leading rep- resentative of a new generation of figurative artists" and was inspired by French Impressionism and Post- Impressionism, according to his biogra- phy on the Park West Gallery's website. He was born in 1935 in Subotica on the Yugoslav-Hungarian border. Mr. Tarkay and his family were forced into the Mathausen concentration camp in Austria in 1944, until the Allied forces freed the camp in 1945. Working primarily with paint, watercolors, drawing and graphic art, Mr. Tarkay made studies of women and land- scapes that exhibited the influences of Lautrec and Matisse in addition to his Israeli roots. She was born and raised in Worcester, Mass., the ninth of 10 children, and was the Obituaries last to survive. She spent her married life in Detroit, where she worked with her husband in his small manufactur- ing business, which she continued to run after his death. She then moved to Scottsdale to be near her family. She con- tinued to work in various retail jobs and volunteered for many years for the Mesa Public Schools, Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn and Har Zion Congregation. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Lawrence (Larry) in 1970; they had met at a USO dance before he was deployed to the Pacific during World War II.
