Bagel Babies!
NEXTGen targets young
families with series of events.
Kendra Rosenzweig of West Bloomfield
B
agel Babies (BB) offers family-
friendly events and Jewish
programming for children aged
birth to 5 years. Jewish families of all
denominations come together three to
four times per year at different syna-
gogues in Metro Detroit and have the
opportunity to socialize, play, nosh on
kosher food and enjoy entertainment, all
free of charge.
One time during the year, BB organizes
a "Mom's Night Out" to help promote a
locally owned business. The mother is
pampered and a portion of the proceeds
from the event goes to Federation's
Annual Campaign to help benefit
the community and make BB events
throughout the year possible.

The most recent event, "Step Forward
into Spring at the Bagel Babies and
Siblings Spring Social," attracted
just under 100 moms, dads and kids
at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield on April 24. Families enjoyed
coloring, riding toys, face painting, bal-
loon animals, magic show from 2clowns.
com and, of course, bagels!
Event co-chairs were Bonnie
Globerman and Jenny Glass. The pro-
gram, formerly a YAD program, now falls
under Federation's NEXTGen and is part
of a larger initiative to engage young
families. For more information, contact

Helping The Hungry
Shaarey Zedek

M
ore than 100 volunteers from
Congregation Shaarey Zedek
participated April 1 in a mitz-
vah project at Forgotten Harvest in Oak
Park. Volunteers of all ages helped to
package hundreds of meals to be given
to those in need in the community.
Jonathan Grey, an eighth-grade Hillel
Day School student and Shaarey Zedek
member, spearheaded the project.
Following his experience volunteering
at Forgotten Harvest on Dec. 25 with
his family and Shaarey Zedek, Jonathan
wanted to create an additional oppor-
tunity to connect CSZ members to this
wonderful organization.
In the past year, Forgotten Harvest
has rescued 23.2 million pounds of
food by collecting surplus, prepared
and perishable food from a variety of
sources such as grocery stores, res-
taurants, caterers, dairies, farmers,
wholesale food distributors and other
Health Department-approved sources.
This donated food — that otherwise
would go to waste — is delivered free of
charge to emergency food providers in
Metro Detroit.
The individuals and families served
are young and old, from all races and
faiths.
