Sprucing Up!

T

Beth Shalom celebrated Earth Day by beautifying the synagogue grounds.

wo dozen members of Congregation Beth Shalom in
Oak Park spent much of Earth Day, April 22, beautify-
ing the synagogue grounds. Though it was a very cool
spring day, the weather didn't shake the spirit of these volun-
teers who pulled weeds and spread mulch.
Mechelle Bernard of Berkley and Allen Wolf of Bloomfield
Hills led the project, with technical leadership from Jeff
Rothenberg of Huntington Woods and Noah Ford of Royal
Oak. Rothenberg, whose business includes interior construc-
tion and concrete work, spent 13 years in the landscape busi-
ness. He has done many projects for the synagogue. Ford is the

sole proprietor of a landscaping company that for years has
maintained the enclosed garden behind the synagogue. Ford, a
non-Jew, also helped decorate the syngagogue sukkah last year.
Other volunteers included Barry, Ari and Miriam
Chesterman; Abigail, Doug, Zac and Ryan Schildcrout;
Wendy, Oz, Maya and Aryeh Gamer; Ethan Rothenberg, all
of Huntington Woods; David, Becky and Naomi Bernard of
Berkley; Linda Bell of Oak Park; and Jan Wanetick, a master
gardener from Southfield.
The event was so energizing that participants are planning
another gardening day in May. LI
