A
s the calendar creeps
into mid-November, it is
a signal that the holiday
season is upon us. What should be a
time of celebration with family and
friends can add stress to already
busy schedules and put a strain on
our physical and mental health. Fox
Run, a continuing care retirement
community in Novi, offers the fol-
lowing tips to make the upcoming
season as stress-free as possible:
Keep up exercise routine:
Time pressures make it harder to
find time to exercise. However, a 30-
to 60-minute workout, even three
or four days a week, not only burns
calories but also reduces stress.
Manage your stress:
Sometimes family gatherings can
be stressful — know this going into
the event. Avoid triggers that could
spark a confrontation. If you can't,
get away from the person who is
creating the tension. Manage shop-
ping stress by preparing before
you go to the stores. Stores will be
crowded, so plan to take your time
and enjoy the festive atmosphere.
Find quiet time:
Even a few minutes of quiet time
every day will help with stress relief.
Eat smart:
Beware of rich foods that we don't
normally eat. Try to mix in fruits
and veggies when you can. Also, try
to skip extra helpings.
Limit alcohol consumption:
When you drink alcohol, also make
sure to drink some non-alcoholic
beverages. Drink 8-12 ounces of
water for every alcoholic beverage.
Have no more than one alcoholic
beverage an hour to avoid intoxica-
tion. Even in small amounts, alco-
hol can impair your judgment.
Most of all, remember that the holi-
day season is a time to enjoy your-
self, your family and friends.
