A Short,
Full Life
M
ira Tova Shewach Elias, 27,
of Ann Arbor, died Sept. 21,
2011.
Although her time was too short,
she left a lasting impact. She was
deeply committed to Judaism and cel-
ebrated her bat mitzvah at Beth Israel
Congregation in Ann Arbor in 1997.
She was a lifelong lover of knowledge
and learning. She excelled at Ann Arbor
Huron High School, where she was a
National Merit Scholar, and at Brandeis
University where she graduated with
high honors in political science.
After graduating from Brandeis, she
lived in France for two years, teaching
English to French elementary school
children and immersing herself in
French life and culture. At each step
in her journey, she formed many close
and enduring friendships.
Ms. Elias loved to sing and enjoyed
participating in choirs in high school,
college and in France. She particularly
enjoyed chanting the Torah reading for
the first day of Rosh Hashanah at Beth
Israel. She loved traveling, which she
did extensively while living in France.
But most of all, she loved people and
she loved life.
She once said that, because she had
cancer, she saw the world in a different
way than most other people. She knew
that life is short and unpredictable, that
you must grab onto every moment.
There are many people who endure
great hardships. These individuals
wake up every morning facing uncer-
tainties that most of us cannot under-
stand and of which we can only catch a
glimpse. Few face an unkind fate with
as much grace as did she. Even after
her too-soon, unkind death, the family
still learns from her great strength and
resilience.
Ms. Elias will be greatly missed by
her family and friends.
She is survived by her parents, Dr.
Stanton Elias and Dr. Donna Shewach;
sister, Anna Elias; brother, Michael Elias;
grandfather, Henry Shewach; niece, Lola
Elias; aunts and uncles, Edward Elias,
Marvin Elias, Charlotte and Kris Raab,
Pam and Mitchel Finkel, Gordon and
Dawn Shewach and their children.
Interment at Arborcrest Cemetery.
