Alive And Very Well

Popular Ginopolis expands menu, updates name.

p

OTPOURRI
With the restaurant business
beginning to show signs of bet-
ter times even during the present slow
economic conditions, it is most important
that misconceptions are ironed out before
they get started.
And it is to the credit of readers like Rob
Zelickman that the proper facts are found
out first before erroneous thoughts are
spread ... Restaurant owners especially
show much appreciation when this is done.
Rob drove by Ginopolis in Farmington
Hills and saw the words "BBQ Smokehouse"
on the sign and writes asking if it was
under new ownership or just changing the
concept.
Ginopolis Restaurant is not under new
ownership ... owners Johnny and Peter
Ginopolis simply changed the name from
Ginopolis on the Grill to Ginopolis BBQ
Smokehouse.
Its new expanded menu includes the
same regular Montgomery Barbecued
Ribs as before ... but now also St. Louis
Ribs for the new dry-rubbed and slowly
smoked addition ... Also included are
numerous other items like succulent lake
perch, whitefish, Norwegian salmon, etc.,
along with new selections for lunch and
dinner.
The name Ginopolis is still under
the clock on the corner of 12 Mile and
Middlebelt.
IT ALL BEGAN when Rabbi Dannel
Schwartz attended a Fourth of July party

Peter Ginopolis and Johnny Ginopolis

at the home of Les and Lili
Gold ... After Les' annual
lavish fireworks display, the
rabbi recalls asking how long
it took and Les told him an
hour ... "Why not make it
40 minutes," said Schwartz
... When Les wondered
about the other 20 minutes,
the rabbi said, "Donate it to
Temple Shir Shalom"
The snowball kept roll-
ing when Rabbi Schwartz
said, "Now we need things for people
to eat," and enlisted Beau Jack's owner
Gary Cochran to round up restaurants
... Schwartz, Gary
and then Temple Shir
Shalom president Stuart
Bas, met over lunch at
Beau Jack's ... and Shir
Shalom's annual Food,
Fun and Fireworks event
was born.
Rabbi Dannel
This was eight years
Schwartz
ago, and every year the
shindig gets bigger ...
The most recent one was in celebration of
Shir Shalom's 23rd anniversary.
That first one brought about 550 attend-
ees ... This year, on Monday, Aug. 15,
a record of approximately 1,200 people
came to enjoy the food of almost 40 par-
ticipants that included around 22 restau-
rants and 15 food handlers.
The record attendance consumed
almost 750 hamburgers from RJ's
American Grille; 140 pounds of roast beef
for around 300 sandwiches by Beau Jack's;
about 500 red velvet pancakes from Zoe's
Pancake House; Goias Postal gave out over
200 kosher hot dogs; Harvard Row Kosher
Meats had potato-veggie kugel and potato
knishe, etc.
Chefs and helpers ran back and forth in
and out of the Shir Shalom kitchen to pre-
pare more food for the inside and outside

dining at tables and chairs.
Sunset Boulevard Orchestra
entertained outdoors where
an ice cream truck gave out ice
cream bars, sandwiches, etc.
to young and old ... A picture
booth inside shot a lot of happy
smiles, and a silent auction had
interesting gifts to bid on.
Then came what so many
waited for ... Darkness and the
large, very colorful and strikingly
beautiful fireworks display that
Les donates each year.
The 2011 chairpersons, Mark Levine
and Janice Schwartz, can be mighty proud
of their many diligent and hard-working
volunteers who were outstanding in their
overall assistance in making sure everyone
enjoyed a very good time.
If number eight was any indication,
future Temple Shir Shalom's Food, Fun and
Fireworks is a fun gala not to be missed.
DANDY DINING DEAL ... Repeated
by requests from folks who were out of
town when first offered ... 10-12-ounce
Whitefish (reg. $14.99) or Ruby Red Trout
(regular $15.99) ... $9.95, Thursday, Aug.
25, though Thursday, Sept. 1 ... Complete
meal includes soup or salad, choice of
potato (baked, sweet potato or mashed),
vegetable and bread basket ... D'Pauli's,
Sugar Tree Plaza, Orchard Lake, north of
15 Mile, West Bloomfield.
THE SPECIALLY-CREATED Summer
in Michigan menu at Steve & Rocky's,
Grand River, Novi, has been going over
big with its made-in-Michigan items ...
Particularly the features like Lake Perch
Saute, Black Walnut-Encrusted Walleye,
Cracker-Crusted Whitefish and Grilled
Beef Tenderloin.
IT WOULD BE much appreciated if
restaurant customers would recognize
some do's and don'ts of dining ... Like do
expect to wait a little longer for your meal
if the eatery is busy ... Don't take it out on

your server if getting the food takes longer
... Know that your server is human, can
forget things at times, may have several
tables besides yours and is really doing the
best he or she can ... Don't ask for bever-
ages or water refills by waving your glass
in the air desperately or trying to get your
server's attention by snapping your fingers
... Do be polite in telling your server how
everything is, good and bad.
On the other side of the coin, waitper-
sons should themselves recognize impor-
tant factors ... Never ever reach in front
of a guest or across another person when
serving at a table, not a booth ... Don't
put soiled, chipped or cracked glassware
and china in front of customers ... Never
keep a customer waiting for his or her
check ... Try to smile and be pleasant as
much as possible.
