DR. JAMES ROE,
89, of Southfield,
died Aug. 9, 2011.
He was born Feb.
19, 1922, in Chicago,
Ill., to Maurice and
Bess Roe. As a boy,
Jim achieved the
Roe
rare distinction of
Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of
America. He served in the U.S. Army
during World War II, where he met
the love of his life at a USO Social and
married Eleanor Ruth Roe.
Dr. Roe graduated from Northern
Illinois College, where he studied
optometry and went on to have a
50-year career, serving patients in the
Detroit Metro area.
He was a founding member of
Temple Emanu-El in Oak Park and a
longtime, active member of the Royal
Oak Kiwanis Club.
Dr. Roe is survived by his daughter
and son-in-law, Susan and James
Canner of Bloomfield Hills; son and
daughter-in-law, Jeff and Sharon Roe
of California; grandchildren, Dr. Jason
and Dr. Janie Canner, Jennifer Canner
and Elliot Roe; great-grandsons, Max
and Will Canner; sister and brother-
in-law, Barbara and Dr. Raymond
Robins of California; sister-in-law,
Phyllis Kerr; niece and nephew, Nancy
Robins and J. Max Robins; caregiver
and companion, Wilma Davis.
He was the beloved husband of the
late Eleanor Ruth Roe for 64 years; the
dear brother-in-law of the late Edwin
Goodwin.
Interment at Clover Hill Park
Cemetery. Contributions may be made
to Cureit, 427 Beloit Avenue, Forest
Park, IL 60130. Arrangements by Ira
Kaufman Chapel.

83, of Walled Lake,
died Aug. 8, 2011.
He was a member
of the Shul-Chabad
Lubavitch in West
Bloomfield and
a
volunteer with
Salter
many organizations,
including Yad Ezra,
Friendship Circle, Masons and Meals
on Wheels.
He co-founded, with his wife, the
Michigan chapter of Crohn's and
Colitis Foundation of America in
1974. He was also active for nearly
40 years with the Livonia Historical
Society (Green Meade) and was
appointed Livonia historical com-
missioner by the mayor. In 2005, he
received the Livonia Volunteer award.
Mr. Salter is survived by his wife,
Arlene Salter; sons and daughters-
in-law, Howard and Elaine Salter
of Olney, Md., Jonathan and Jenifer
Salter; grandson, Matthew Salter;
brother-in-law and sisters-in-law,
Kenneth and Fran Herman, Beverly
Salter; aunts, Lilyan Finer, Ruth Gould,
Sayde Hoffman; many other loving
relatives and friends.
He was the dear brother of the late
Charles Salter.

89, of Oak Park, died
Aug. 11, 2011.
He is survived by his son and

Rosemary Tolchin of Oak Park;
daughter, Janet Belenson of
Southfield; brother and sister-in-law,
Sam and Esther Tolchin; grand-
children, Randi and Kevin Resnick,
Darrel Belenson, Jaclyn Tolchin, Jason
Tolchin; great-grandchildren, Hannah,
Molly and Lilly Resnick.
Mr. Tolchin was the beloved hus-
band of over 60 years of the late
Lillian Tolchin; dear brother and
brother-in-law of the late Oscar and
the late Gertrude Tolchin.
