JAMES ROE, 89, of Southfield, died Aug. 9, 2011. He was born Feb. 19, 1922, in Chicago, Ill., to Maurice and Bess Roe. As a boy, Jim achieved the Roe rare distinction of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he met the love of his life at a USO Social and married Eleanor Ruth Roe. Dr. Roe graduated from Northern Illinois College, where he studied optometry and went on to have a 50-year career, serving patients in the Detroit Metro area. He was a founding member of Temple Emanu-El in Oak Park and a longtime, active member of the Royal Oak Kiwanis Club. Dr. Roe is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and James Canner of Bloomfield Hills; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Sharon Roe of California; grandchildren, Dr. Jason and Dr. Janie Canner, Jennifer Canner and Elliot Roe; great-grandsons, Max and Will Canner; sister and brother- in-law, Barbara and Dr. Raymond Robins of California; sister-in-law, Phyllis Kerr; niece and nephew, Nancy Robins and J. Max Robins; caregiver and companion, Wilma Davis. He was the beloved husband of the late Eleanor Ruth Roe for 64 years; the dear brother-in-law of the late Edwin Goodwin. He co-founded, with his wife, the Michigan chapter of Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America in 1974. He was also active for nearly 40 years with the Livonia Historical Society (Green Meade) and was appointed Livonia historical com- missioner by the mayor. In 2005, he received the Livonia Volunteer award.
