A traditional Lag b'Omer food is barley, reminiscent of the grain offering
made by the ancient Israelites at the Temple on the second day of Passover.
B
etween Passover and Shavout,
on the 18th day of the month
of Iyar, falls the Jewish
holiday of Lag b'Omer, which this
year will be celebrated on
Sunday, May 22.
Though not widely
observed in the United
States, Lag b'Omer merits a
day off from school for chil-
dren in Israel and a time
of merriment during the
otherwise plaintive period
between these two holidays.
Lag b'Omer literally
means 33 days after the
offering. The word "lag"
is an acronym from the
letters "lamed" and "gim-
mel," which together have a
numeric value of 33. Omer is a mea-
sure of grain and refers to an offering
made on the second day of Passover
at the Temple in Jerusalem.
The time between Passover and
Shavuot is known as the sefirat ha-
Omer, or counting period. That's
because after the second night
of Passover, the days are literally
counted — 49 to be exact
— until Shavuot, the feast
of the spring harvest and
the yearly celebration of
the receiving of the Ten
Commandments at Mount
Sinai.
In ancient times, the
Passover offering is
thought to have been bar-
ley; thus it is a traditional
Lag b'Omer food. Israelis
celebrate the day with pic-
nics and barbecues.
For our Lag b'Omer
feast, we recommend warm
lemon barley, along with a grilled
portabella mushroom salad and a
favorite simple grilled chicken with
Asian peanut sauce — just the thing
for this festive your toy.
