High, Low Rollers

iN

arolyn Fine is a fiercely com-
petitive bowler. "When I bowl

in a tournament, I want to win:'
she said.
Margie Winston happily resides on
the other end of the competition spec-
trum."Am I a social bowler? Absolutely:'
she said. "I bowl so I can spend time
with my friends, see and be seen. I don't
worry about my score."
The Farmington Hills residents
both competed in the 59th annual
Jewish Women International Bowling
Association of Metropolitan Detroit
tournament at Langan's Nor-West Lanes
in their hometown and made news.
After struggling in the first five games
of the two-day event, Fine rolled a 231
in her sixth and final game. It was the
only 200-plus score of the weekend. Her
previous best games in the tournament
were a pair of 169s.
Winston bowled 218 pins over aver-
age for the tournament, the most of the
nearly 60 bowlers on 12 teams. Her aver-
age is only 81, but her accomplishment
impressed Fine.
"No matter what your average, it's
very difficult to bowl that many pins
over it over six games," she said.
There's more. Winston also was a
member of the winning team, which
called itself Better To Be Lucky Than
Good and represented the Galilee
Wednesday league. Captain Shelley
Gershune, Jan Tilchen, Ruth Frankel,
Susie Goodman and Winston com-
bined to roll 5715 (including handicap)
in six games.
Winston doesn't bowl very often, and
she throws the ball right-handed even
though she's a southpaw. Those factors
certainly contribute to her low scores.
"I've tried bowling left-handed, but it
doesn't feel right',' she said. "I don't know
why I bowl right-handed. Maybe whoever
taught me had me bowl right-handed."
Now that she's made her mark on the
lanes, Winston is considering calling it a
career. "That's the best I've ever bowled
or ever will bowl," she said. "Maybe I
should quit while I'm ahead."
If Winston competes in next year's
JWIBA tournament, she'll be part of an
historic weekend. Fine, a past president
of the association, said the 60th annual
tournament will be special. "We'll do

something extra. We'll start working on
that in the fall," she said.
Like many bowling tournaments, the
association's event has shrunk through
the years. Fine remembers about 30
years ago when there were as many as
150 bowlers competing in two houses.
"Sure, the tournament has gotten
smaller, but that's no reason to stop
holding it:' she said. "It's a lot of fun,
and it provides an opportunity to corn-
pete for those who can't make it to the
JWIBA regional tournament:'
Second place in the team competition
at the Detroit tournament went to the
Dreycups from Galilee Wednesday, head-
ed by captain Dianne Schneider. Other
team members were Lynda Steinberg,
Barb Redstone, Leigh Herskovic and
Marianne Pesick. They bowled 5660
with handicap.
Frame of Mind from Galilee/Israel
Zeiger had the best game (990 with
handicap). Fine was the captain of the
team. Andrea Reid and Carol Shapiro
also were on the squad.
F-Sure from Israel Zeiger had a 985
game with handicap. Captain Gert
Feldman, Carolyn Feldman, Adrienne
Gersten, Caron Goldfine and Erica
Zonder were on the team.
There were individual awards for all
games, high series and high game based
on actual pinfall and with handicap.
Bowlers from 11 of the 12 teams won
an individual award for placing first or
second in a category.
The winners in each category (A
Division: 132 and above average; B
Division: (131 and below average):
All games actual pinfall — Fine (995)
and Lois Greenberg (800).
All games with handicap — Andrea
Reid (1191) and Winston (1244).
High series actual pinfall — Gershune
(516) and Ardele Wolfson (411).
High series with handicap —
Goodman (608) and Tilchen (599).
High game actual pinfall — Elaine
Meyers/Schneider (187) and Debbie
Tapper (158).
Nettie
High game with handicap
Rosen (229) and Brenda Waldman
(212).
Fine did not win the high game actual
pinfall for her division because she won
the all games category.
