TACOM Engineer Appeals
Lawyers for David Tenenbaum
of Southfield have asked the U.S.
Supreme Court to review lower court
rulings against their client.
Tenenbaum, an engineer with the
U.S. Army Tank, Automotive and
Armaments Command in Warren,
was falsely accused in the 1990s of
giving secret documents to Israeli
officials at the TACOM facility. The
U.S. Department of Defense inspec-
tor general's office later ruled that
Tenenbaum came under suspicion
because he was an Orthodox Jew.
After several years of investigation
and surveillance by the FBI, the gov-
ernment dropped the charges against
Tenenbaum. He then sued, alleging
that he was denied promotions and
work that he was qualified to do dur-
ing the investigation.
The U.S. District Court ended the
suit when the government said it could
not defend itself without releasing
classified information. In December,
the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals
in Cincinnati ruled that the issues
Tenenbaum raised in his appeal to
them had been raised in the suit in
District Court. The appeals court
agreed that Tenenbaum's life was
turned upside down by the investiga-
tion.
Birmingham attorney Jeffrey
Morganroth filed the appeal to
the Supreme Court on behalf of
Tenenbaum.
Pope Benedict Visits
Nazi Victims' Graves
Rome/JTA Pope Benedict XVI visited
the mass grave of the victims of a Nazi
massacre near Rome.
The pope on Sunday
called the 1944 mas-
sacre of 335 Italian
Jews and Catholics
by Nazi soldiers at
the Ardeatine Caves a
"grave offense against
Pope Benedict God." The victims
included Italian army
officers, resistance fighters, civilians and
75 members of Rome's Jewish commu-
nity:
In the cave where the massacre vic-
tims are buried, the pope read prayers
alongside the graves with Roman Chief
Rabbi Riccardo Di Segni. Relatives of the
victims attended the ceremony.
In the book of witness at the entrance
to the cave, the pope wrote in Latin that
"I shall fear no evil because You are with
me',' Vatican Radio reported.
Benedict is the third pope to visit the
site; Paul VI visited in 1965 and John
Paul II in 1982.
