Jewish Star from page 3
Richard Burton and Elizabeth
Taylor in Cleopatra
edly is set to direct the movie
version of Furious Love, which
should be interesting since Nichols
directed Taylor and Burton in Who's
Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, the 1966
film that the public came to view
as a window into the couple's real
marriage.
The New York Times review of
the book aptly summed up their
relationship: "In their prime, the
Burtons made 'married love' seem
`glamorous and sexy, `even danger-
ous, the authors write. They also
made it seem deranged and code-
pendent."
Taylor's highly public purchase
of $100, 000 in Israel Bonds in 1959
led to an Arab boycott of her films.
She traveled to Israel and fund-
raised for the Jewish state during
the Arab boycott in the 1970s. In
1977, she and then-husband John
Warner were JNF dinner honorees.
She also was a supporter of the
Kabbalah Center in Los Angeles.
She reportedly offered herself as
a hostage in exchange for the more
than 100 Air France hijack vic-
tims held by terrorists at Entebbe
Airport in Uganda in July 1976.
Taylor narrated the Simon
Wiesenthal Center's Genocide film,
which won a 1981 Oscar.
She also supported with her time
and money several AIDS-related
charities, including the Elizabeth
Taylor AIDS Foundation.
Taylor was a friend and staunch
supporter of Michael Jackson
when he was accused of molest-
ing children. Jackson wrote the
song "Elizabeth, I Love You" and
performed it at her 65th birthday
celebration.

Obama Condolences,
Support Is Pledged
Washington/JTA — President Obama
conveyed to Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu his condo-
lences over recent terrorist attacks
and reaffirmed "unwavering" com-
mitment to Israel's security.
The call came
after the bus-
stop bombing in
Jerusalem and mor-
tar attacks from
Gaza on southern
Israel.
A U.S. statement
Barack
said Netanyahu
Obama
appreciated" the
call and that the
leaders "agreed to
remain in close touch on a range of
regional security issues."
Israel has been seeking American
reassurances in the wake of a wave
of uprisings in the Arab world. U.S.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates
met March 24 with Ehud Barak, his
Israeli counterpart, and said advanc-
ing peace talks with the Palestinians
was more critical than ever because
of regional turmoil.

Jerusalem Bomb Casualty
Was A British National
Jerusalem/JTA — The lone fatal-
ity in the bombing at a bus stop in
central Jerusalem on March 23 was
a British woman studying at Hebrew
University.
Mary Jean Gardner, 59, had been
in Israel since January, the London
Jewish Chronicle reported.
More than three dozen people
were injured in the bombing. Among
them was an American teenager
spending a post-high school year in
Israel.
Leah Green of Cleveland suffered
burns and shrapnel wounds. The
explosion threw her in the air and
her leg caught on fire.
The bomb had been left in a
bag near the bus stop on a major
Jerusalem thoroughfare across from
the International Convention Center.
Two buses in front of the stop had
their windows blown out.
News Show Alleges
Netanyahu Took Trips
Jerusalem/JTA — Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife
have taken trips abroad funded
by private businessmen since he
returned to politics, an Israeli inves-
tigative TV news show alleged.
"Makor," which
aired March 23,
accused Netanyahu
of taking 16 pri-
vately financed
trips while serving
his second term as
prime minister and
Benjamin
as a Cabinet min-
Netanyahu
ister.
The program
alleged that he
accepted privately financed flights,
luxury hotel stays and upscale res-
taurant meals from wealthy busi-
nessmen and Jewish organizations.
The opposition Kadima Party filed
an official complaint March 24 with
Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein
asking him to investigate the allega-
tions made on the program.
Facebook Responds
To Israel's Request
New York/JTA — After initially
saying it would review the request,
Facebook on Tuesday bowed to
Israeli and U.S. Jewish calls to
remove a page advocating for a third
Palestinian intifada.
Yuli Edelstein,
minister of
diplomacy and
diaspora affairs,
in a letter sent
March 23, asked
Facebook founder
Mark Zuckerberg
to delete "Third
Mark
Palestinian
Zuckerberg
Intifada," which
calls for a third Palestinian uprising
to begin May 15. The page, which
has more than 230,000 friends,
called for killing Jews and Israelis,
and for "liberating" Jerusalem and
Palestine using violence.
Syria To Consider
Lifting Emergency Law
Jerusalem/JTA — The Syrian gov-
ernment said it would consider
abolishing a more than 40-year-old
emergency law following the deaths
of anti-government protesters.
The March 24 announcement by
Syrian President Bashar Assad's
media adviser during a televised
news conference came after at least
10 protesters in the southern city of
Deraa were killed the previous day
in clashes with soldiers.
The emergency law, put in place in
1963, suspends most constitutional
rights.
Your
Financial
Problems
--- If I can't afford
to pay my
taxes, should I
still file my returns?
Yes, IRS and the State
assess failure-to-file
penalties that can
add up to 25% of the
unpaid tax. If you don't file
your returns, they may file
your return for you at a sig-
nificantly inflated rate. If ig-
nored, they may unmercifully
levy or garnish you. Handled
properly, affordable payment
terms and sometimes a com-
promise of the debt is obtain-
able. You have rights - but
you should not try and fight
them alone. The national tax
services are good at taking
your money - not defending
your rights. BOTTOM LINE
