HOWARD J.
STEINMETZ, 78, died
in Boulder, Colo., Nov.
27, 2010.
He was born in the
Bronx, N. Y., to Julius
and Eva (Labensky).
As a teenager he
Steinmetz
moved with his fam-
ily to Detroit. After he
married, he moved to Saginaw, where
for nearly 50 years, owned the Host
Companies.
Mr. Steinmetz was inducted into the
Michigan Promotional Professional's
Hall of Fame for excellence and cre-
ativity in the advertising specialties
industry. A few years ago, the MDEQ
informed him that Dow Chemical had
contaminated his shoreline property by
disposing Dioxin into the Tittabawassee
River. The exposure caused health prob-
lems and the couple moved to Boulder.
While enduring cancer treatments, he
was enriched by passionately immers-
ing himself in the ancestral journey of
genealogy.
He fleshed out the data by telling
stories of individuals he found. In his
words, "They were more than names
and dates carved on tombstones. The
stories are a legacy left for future gen-
erations who would then know how
and where their antecedents lived and
survived. Rather than simply tracing
who begat whom, weave the strands of
information unraveled, add family tales
to make a whole cloth of them; honor-
ing the lives of ancestors; equivalent of
a perpetual yahrtzeit candle'
He was active in the Jewish
Genealogical and Historical Society,
the Jewish community, synagogues,
writers, and senior groups in Michigan
and Colorado. He was honored last fall,
with the Spirit Award by the Jewish

with his optimistic jovial spirit.

Shaffer (Bruce) of Boulder, Monica
