On The Homefront
Homeowners are another group
interested in energy savings,
water conservation, reuse of
existing building materials
and eco-living. Homes in Ann
Arbor, Bloomfield Hills, western
Michigan and elsewhere have
earned LEED certification. As
prices for these certifications
continue to drop, more and more
homeowners will follow in the
footsteps of these early adopters.
Even Habitat for Humanity sees
the value of LEED homes and has
embarked on local projects to earn
this designation for their home-
owners.
While some private developers
and building owners have seen the
value of constructing new LEED
buildings, recently the greater
emphasis has been obtaining LEED
certification with retrofits to exist-
ing buildings that conserve energy
and save money for their owners.
With all the older, outdated,
obsolete, inefficient, poorly oper-
ated and maintained buildings in
the area, there is no shortage of
inventory that could be updated
through this program and desig-
nation.
These retrofits could be the
beginning of a true renaissance for
the entire area as a whole with the
creation of not just healthier, bet-
ter functioning buildings but job
creation for the "new economy."
As with many others involved
in the green building movement,
the best days for Metro Detroit re-
building itself into a more sustain-
able, world-class city are ahead. II

economy and be leaders in envi-
ronmental stewardship, have begun
to build and retrofit their buildings
with this designation in mind.
More and more local municipal
projects will be striving to achieve
LEED designations in the future as
both the state and federal govern-
ment strongly support these goals.
