Volunteer And Teacher

une Marx, 97, of
Farmington Hills, died Nov.
13, 2010.
She came to Michigan as a young
bride and together with her husband
raised three children in northwest
Detroit. Bright and articulate, she was
a valued volunteer for
the National Council
of Jewish Women
and Temple Beth El.
She was a "June of all
trades" at Garelick's Art
Gallery on Livernois
Avenue in Detroit.
Always an avid
reader, Mrs. Marx
decided in her late 40s
to take classes at the
June Marx
University of Detroit,
c. 1982
eventually earning an
advanced degree in English. Taking
two courses a semester, it took her
nearly 20 years to graduate; and,
although she wanted to teach, by now
she was 65 and thought she was too
old to apply for a fellowship. However,
her dean thought otherwise; and that
fellowship led to teaching experi-
ences at U-D and Marygrove College
that she would treasure forever.
Although considerably older than
most of her colleagues, she formed
lifelong friendships with fellow
teachers and was highly respected by
her colleagues and students alike.
She spoke French and immersed
herself easily in European culture
and cuisine on several trips to Paris.
Despite being housebound since
1990, Mrs. Marx had an appreciation
of art and literature and all things
beautiful that went far beyond the
walls of her home. She was always
reading five books at a time, rang-

ing from James Thurber to Jean Paul
Sartre. Her interests and knowledge
of the world ranged from French
literature to tropical fish, flowers, the
Detroit Tigers and her beloved dogs.
She was an honest, quirky, witty
woman, a great conversationalist
and a very funny
lady. Her family and
friends knew they
could always go to her
for wise counsel and
that they could always
count on her support.
She died in her home
with Marcy, her pug
dog, and surrounded
by family and an
incredible team of
caregivers.
Mrs. Marx is
survived by her son and daughter-
in-law, John and Judy Marx of West
Bloomfield; daughter and son-in-law,
Mary Marx and Stafford French of
Georgia; grandchildren, Jennifer
and Jeffrey Hollander and Barry and
Karen Marx; great-grandchildren,
Rachel and Ari Hollander and Lily
Mar; many longtime friends and
devoted caregivers.
She was the beloved wife of the late
Dr. Milton Marx; the loving mother
of the late Louis Marx.
Interment at Woodmere Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to Jewish
Family Service, Louis Marx Volunteer
Services Fund, 6555 W. Maple Road,
West Bloomfield, MI 48322, www.

for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
(ASPCA), 424 E. 92nd Street, New
York, NY 10128-6804, www.aspca.
