Telushkin is the bestselling author
of Jewish Literacy: The Most Important
Things to Know About the Jewish
Religion, Its People and Its History. He
also authored A Code of Jewish Ethics:
You Shall be Holy; Biblical Literacy:
The Most Important People, Events and
Ideas of the Hebrew Bible; and Words
that Hurt; Words that Heal.
Telushkin is spiritual leader of the
Synagogue for the Performing Arts in
Los Angeles.
At SYNergy, his Friday evening
topic is "Biblical Literacy: 10 Biblical
Teachings That Can Change The Way
You Live."
Friday evening programming will
begin at 6 p.m. with a Shabbat Rocks
service followed by a Shabbat buf-
fet dinner and the presentation by
Telushkin. Childcare will start at 7:30
p.m. and extend until the end of the
adult program. At 8 p.m., children will
see a presentation by Animal Magic.
Traditional services will begin at
9 a.m. Shabbat morning. At 9:30,
Telushkin will speak to religious school
families on "Being a Good Person in
a Complicated World."At 10, Rabbi
Aaron Bergman will hold a study ses-
sion,"Why the Torah Starts with a Bet."
Rabbi Rachel Shere will conduct an 11
a.m. study session on "Food & God:
Filling the Void."Beginning at 10:15,
there will be drop-off youth services.
Kiddush will follow services.
In a post-kiddush program,
Telushkin will speak on "The Jewish
War: The Battle (in Israel and the
United States) to Keep the Jewish
People One, and How It Can Be Wore

CommunityNEXT, a division of the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, is launching BackStagePass
(BSP), an exclusive four-year job
and internship program targeting
incoming high school juniors.
BSP is looking for students
with diverse backgrounds and the
leadership ability to make real
change within and outside the
local community. BSP will expose
high school juniors to elements of
the Jewish and larger Detroit com-
munities through a series of social,
cultural and professional events
participants would not otherwise
have access to.
BSP applications will be accepted
through Oct. 15. Interviews will
be conducted throughout October,
with final decisions announced
Nov. 15. The first class of BSP
participants will start in January.
