Beth Ahm Tot Shabbat
Tot Shabbat and Shabbat Club,
Congregation Beth Ahm's Shabbat
morning activities for kids aged 3-5 and
in grades K-6, are set for 10:30-11:30
a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9. There is no charge
but pre-registration is requested.
Tot Shabbat, for children accompanied
by an adult, is facilitated by Barbara
Dworin. Shabbat Club is divided into
two age groups — kindergarten-grade
2 and grades 3-6 — and is led by Susan
Sinai and Debbie Rosenberg.
Tot Shabbat and Shabbat Club will
also meet on Oct. 23.

Youth Weight Reduction
Medical Weight Loss Clinics through-
out Michigan are offering its medi-
cally supervised "Pro-Teen Plan" at
no cost to youths aged 10-17 as part
of its continuing efforts to help fight
childhood obesity.
This program is available for
eight weeks to the first 25 youths
who qualify at each of MWLC's 34
locations throughout Michigan and
across northern Ohio — a total of
850 youths who can benefit from this
offer. Qualifications will be based on
an age-appropriate minimum body
mass index (BMI) as determined by
MWLC guidelines.

Beth Ahm provides free, drop-in baby-
sitting for ages 18 months and up every
Shabbat morning from 10 a.m. through
the conclusion of services.

Temple Israel Play Groups
Temple Israel in West Bloomfield has
several play groups available for the
youngest members of a family.
• "Tot"ally Shabbat lets parents cel-
ebrate Shabbat with other parents
and children. Early Childhood Center
Educator Jodie Kanagur will lead this
Shabbat experience on Saturdays, Oct.
2, Nov. 6, and Dec. 4, 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Open to children 5 and younger.
• Busy Babies is for babies through
age 21/2 and includes music, gym and
Shabbat snacks. Classes will meet 11
a.m.–noon on Fridays, Oct. 8, Nov. 12
and Dec. 10, and will continue once a
month.

"Bagels & Books" and "Books & Bites" is
sponsored by Temple Beth El's Prentis
Memorial Library and the Temple
Sisterhood in Bloomfield Township.
The two groups will meet on selected
Mondays: "Bagels & Books" at 10 a.m. in
the library and "Books & Bites" at 7 p.m.

Facilitating this year are Keren Alpert,
Beth El's rabbinic associate; Steven
Berman, professor of English at Oakland
Community College; Susan Chalom,
professor of English at Wayne State
University; Eileen Polk, Beth El librarian;
and Marilyn Schelberg, Judaic educator.
The series opens Oct. 18 with a dis-
cussion of Grand River and Joy by local
author Susan Messer. Berman facilitates
the discussion.
Berman returns Nov. 29 to discuss City
of Thieves by David Benioff.
On Jan. 17, Marilyn Schelberg will
facilitate a discussion of Songs for the
Butcher's Daughter by Peter Manseau.
Keren Alpert will lead the discussion
Feb. 21 of Amos Oz's The Panther in the
Basement, on which the movie, The Little
Traitor, was based.
On April 11, Eileen Polk will discuss
The Invisible Wall: A Love Story that
Broke Barriers by Harry Bernstein.
The series closes May 16 with Marilyn
Schelberg's discussion of Standing By:
The Making of an American Military
Family in a Time of War by Alison
Buckholtz.
Cost of the series is $30. There is a $10
per session drop-in fee.
