t has been 13 months since we at
the Jewish Housing Association of
Metropolitan Detroit opened our
Southfield office, the second service
center serving low- and middle-
income families that don't require
the more extensive resources made
available to our community by Jewish
Family Service.
We take great pride in providing corn-
fort and education to the families we
serve. Also, the savings achieved from
our services during the past Jewish
year of 5770 have been remarkable:
•Almost 100 loan modifications
and forbearance agreements for
Jewish families who could no longer
afford their mortgage payments. The
modifications and agreements allowed
these families to keep their homes
and, on average, reduce monthly hous-
ing costs by 50 percent.
• An average saving of more than
$800 per month for Jewish families
obtaining loan modifications.

• More than $700,000 per year in
annual savings for Jewish families not
only this year, but also over the next
five years.
• Savings to our community of more
than $3 million in housing payments
over the next five years.
• More than 500 counseling ses-
sions in which we discussed mortgage
options for Jewish families whose
homes were "under water" in value,
whose mortgage payments were delin-
quent and who required transitioning
into lower-cost housing in the com-
munity.
• More than 150 additional loan
modifications are in process with
lenders, banks and servicers.
We will continue our work in the
Jewish year of 5771. We are grateful to
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, Jewish Family Service of
Metropolitan Detroit, Hebrew Free
Loan of Metropolitan Detroit and all of
their dedicated staffs for working with
us to accomplish affordable housing for
all Jewish families in this time of need.
From all of us at the Jewish Housing
Association, l'shanah tovah!

Ann Arbor

The Wellness Community of Southeast Michigan is introducing a new
time for Kids Kicking Cancer to better accommodate school-aged chil-
dren. This free program is dedicated to helping kids with cancer, kids
whose parents have cancer and siblings of children with cancer.
Children learn karate, breathing, meditation and visualization tech-
niques to help them cope with pain as well as self-empowerment and
focus. Says one parent, "The power-breathing and meditation my child
has learned — she uses every time we go in for chemo. The needle
sticks that would have her screaming, she doesn't even feel now
because she is able to relax and get through it."
Kids Kicking Cancer is a weekly program that takes place at the
Wellness Community 4:30-5:30 p.m. each Thursday. Classes are free and
taught by black-belt martial artists. Parents are welcome to sit in during
the class and meet with other families dealing with similar cancer journeys.
Call (734) 975-2500.
Advanced registration is required. For information or registration con-
tact Kids Kicking Cancer at (313) 557-0021 or
e-mail cindy®kidskickingcancer.net or the Wellness Community at
