Lazarus Teaches
Israel Advocacy
Jerusalemite Neil Lazarus, a popu-
lar speaker before Taglit-Birthright
Israel groups, visited Detroit in
late August and spoke to a Jewish
audience of 200 during an ASK
(Adults Seeking Knowledge)
luncheon at Temple Israel, West
Bloomfield.
After updating the audience on
the current situation in Israel and
providing strategies for combatting
unfair criticism of the Jewish state,
Lazarus spoke about how any one
individual can become an effective
advocate for Israel.
He suggested
contacting mem-
bers of Congress,
writing letters to
the editor, com-
plaining or prais-
ing media cover-
age, and speaking
to
friends, neigh-
Neil Lazarus
bors, co-workers
and family mem-
bers about supporting Israel.
Later that day, Lazarus pro-
vided advice about teaching about
Israel to religious school directors,
induding Rabbi Aaron Starr of the
Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield and Elissa Berg of Adat
Shalom Synagogue in Farmington
Hills as well as Kathy Sklar, assis-
tant principal of Akiva Hebrew Day
School in Southfield. The educators
asked Lazarus to share his curricula.
Lazarus' evening presenta-
tion,"The Five Rules of Effective
Israel Advocacy' was presented
to about two-dozen college stu-
dents and recent graduates at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
During his Detroit visit, Lazarus
held meetings with Robert Aronson,
president of the Birthright Israel
Foundation, and Tim Cohen, a
former Detroiter who is now a vice
president of Hillel: The Foundation
for Jewish Campus Life.
Neil Lazarus' Detroit visit was
sponsored by the Consulate General
of Israel; his itinerary was planned
and implemented by the Jewish
Community Relations Council of
Metropolitan Detroit (JCRC).
