Nuremberg Laws Transferred
WASHINGTON (JTA) — The original
Nuremberg Laws documents were
transferred to the National Archives in
Washington, where they will reside per-
manently.
The papers, transported on Aug.
25 from the Huntington Library, Art
Collections, and Botanical Gardens in
California, were signed by Hitler in 1935
and codified the systematic extermina-
tion of Jews in Nazi Germany. They are
thought to be the only copies of the
Nuremberg Laws to exist.
Gen. George Patton, who was given
the papers by U.S. soldiers who found
them in a German bank vault and then
disobeyed orders by bringing them out
of Germany, gave the documents to the
Huntington in 1945.
The pages specify what made a person
Jewish and stripped those who fell into
that category of their German citizen-
ship. The laws were broken down into
three broad categories: The Laws for
the Safeguard of German Blood and
German Honor forbade intermarriage or
cohabitation between Aryans and Jews;
The Reich's Citizen Law said German cit-
izens must be of German blood; and the
Reich's Flag Law outlined the Nazi flag.

Obama: Rabbi 'Incites'
WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The Obama
administration condemned what it said
was incitement by an influential Israeli
rabbi.
"We regret and condemn the inflam-
matory statements by Rabbi Ovadia
Yosef" State Department spokesman P.J.
Crowley said Sunday in a statement.
On the eve of Israeli-Palestinian peace
talks, Yosef, a former chief Sephardic
rabbi and the spiritual leader of the
Shas Party, wished for the demise
of Palestinian Authority President
Mahmoud Abbas.
"Abu Mazen and all these evil people
should perish from this world," Yosef
reportedly said during his weekly
Saturday night sermon at a Jerusalem
synagogue, using Abbas' byname. "God
should strike them with a plague, them
and these Palestinians"
Palestinian Authority officials have
asked the Israeli government to con-
demn the remarks. Shas is a member of
the governing coalition, but Yosef has no
formal government role.
"We note the Israeli statement that the
rabbi's comments do not reflect the
views of the Prime Minister;' Crowley
said. "These remarks are not only deeply
offensive, but incitement such as this
also hurts the cause of peace. As we
move forward to relaunch peace nego-

tiations, it is important that actions by
people on all sides help to advance our
effort, not hinder it:'
The Anti-Defamation League on
Monday condemned Yosef's statements
as "offensive and incendiary,' cautioning
that his words "contribute to a potentially
dangerous environment of intolerance
and hatred:'

Obama's Jewish Support
WASHINGTON (JTA) — Nearly two-
thirds of Jews still approve of President
Obama's performance, but his approval
numbers have dipped.
A Gallup Poll of religious groups in the
United States found that Muslims gave
Obama the highest job approval rating,
while Mormons gave him the lowest.
Jews and those affiliated with other non-
Christian religions gave Obama above-
average ratings, as did those with no
religious affiliation.
From January to July this year, Jews
gave Obama a 61 percent approval rat-
ing, down from 66 percent from July to
December 2009. Muslims gave the presi-
dent a 78 percent approval rating during
the first half of 2010, and Mormons a 24
percent rating.
The overall approval rating of 48 per-
cent is down 15 points from the first half
of 2009.
Obama received average job approval
ratings from Catholics, and below-aver-
age ratings from Protestants.

Answering
Israel's Critics

The Charge
The Damascus-based leader of
the terrorist Hamas organization,
Khaled Meshal, said last week that
the upcoming direct talks between
Israel and the Palestinian Authority
(P.A.) are illegitimate and were
coerced by the U.S.

The Answer
Meshal and Hamas are rejection-
ists. Israel and the P.A. are moving
forward with peace negotiations in
an effort to strengthen the secu-
rity situation for both, continue
economic progress — especially
regarding tourism — and improve
the hope for peace.
