SYLVIA J. POLLAK, 98,
of Southfield, died Aug.
16, 2010.
She earned a business
degree from Commerce
High School follow-
ing graduation from
Detroit Northern High
Pollak
School. Mrs. Pollack was
a past president of Bagley South Chapter
of Hadassah, a former Girl Scout Leader, a
member of Adat Shalom Synagogue for 58
years and a member of B'nai Moshe prior
to Adat Shalom.
She is survived by her son and daughter-
in-law, Dr. Sanford and Cheryl Pollak of
Florida; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara

and Gerald Cook of Farmington Hills;
grandchildren, Bryan Pollak and C.J. Smith,
Jason Pollak, Alisa and Gil Golan, Cheryl
Cook and Judge Devin Cohen, Matthew
Cook and Michelle Rowe, Elizabeth and
Jeremy Kahn; great-grandchildren, Jacob
and Lauren Pollak, Joshua Pollak, Madison
and Andrew Golan, Cameron Cook and
Isaac Cohen; sister-in-law, Perrie Pollak.
Mrs. Pollak was the beloved wife of the late
Julius Pollak; loving sister of the late Mitchell
Feldman; dear sister-in-law of the late Helen
Feldman, the late Alexander Pollak, the late
Louis and the late Margaret Pollak, the late
Janet and the late Albert Dunn.

DR. HOWARD
ROTHSTEIN, 74, former
Detroiter and a long-
time biology professor
at Fordham University,
died July 23, 2010, at
White Plains Hospital
Center in New York.
Rothstein
He was born Aug.
25, 1935, in Brooklyn,
the son of Morris and Esther Rothstein.
Growing up amidst a neighborhood of
immigrants created a lifelong interest in
languages. He learned to speak Yiddish,
Spanish and Italian.
Science was always of interest. He gradu-
ated from Johns Hopkins University in
Baltimore, Md., earned a Ph.D. from the
University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia
and conducted postdoctoral research in the
ophthalmology department at Columbia
University in New York City.
His career in cell physiology spanned
more than 45 years beginning 1962 in the
zoology department , University of Vermont,
Burlington. By 1970, he was a tenured

professor, remaining at UVM until 1977.
From 1977 to 1981 he was a professor at
Kresge Eye Institute, Wayne State School of
Medicine, Detroit and then chairman and
professor in the department of biological
sciences at Fordham University, Bronx, N.Y.
His research interests included insulin-
like growth factors, regulation of growth
in cornea and lens, wound healing and
radiation cataracts. He published 125 sci-
entific papers, and a textbook titled General
Physiology: The Cellular and Molecular Basis.
He served on university committees and
was a reviewer and editor for scientific jour-
nals. Other interests included: linguistics,
history of science and finance and investing.
Dr. Rothstein is survived by his wife,
Nurith of Hartsdale, N.Y.; daughters,
Arlene Gokee of Chittenden, Vt., Caren
Robinson of Fairfax, Va.; son, Dr. Jeff
Rothstein of Ann Arbor; five grand-
children; sister, Barbara Borer; brother,
Harvey Rothstein; nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Mount Hebron
Cemetery in Flushing, N.Y. Contributions
may be made to the United States
