etroit families are invited to
play games, eat s'mores and
have camp-inspired fun on
Sunday, Oct. 3, at the home of Doreen
Hermelin for ORT America Michigan
Region's only family event, Camp
Hermelin.
Camp Hermelin began as a way
to involve families in ORT's mission
to provide top-notch education for
lifelong success. Since 1880, ORT has
empowered students around the world
with the skills they need to succeed in
the work force.
"Dan and I are so thrilled that our
family is involved with Camp Hermelin
and with OW says Jennifer Gilbert, a
Camp Hermelin co-chair. Dan Gilbert's
Quicken Loans is a sponsor this year
for all ORT Michigan programs. Both
the Gilbert family and Quicken Loans
have supported ORT for years.
"The mission and the goals of ORT
are values that everyone can get on
board with:' says Gilbert. "What bet-
ter mission is there than to empower
people to be self-sufficient?"
Camp Hermelin will offer partici-
pants a variety of camp-style activities
at the Bingham Farms home of Doreen
Hermelin, immediate past national
president of ORT America. She is a cur-
rent national board member.

At Hospital Benefit
Figure skating legend Peggy Fleming,
who won a gold medal in the 1968
Olympics, will keynote the sixth annual
Mothers, Daughters, Sisters & Friends
luncheon.
The event will take place at 11 a.m.
Monday, Sept. 20, at the Shenandoah
Golf, Banquet & Country Club, 5600
Walnut Lake Road, West Bloomfield. It
is a benefit for the Francee & Benson
Ford Jr. Breast Care & Wellness Center
at Henry Ford West Bloomfield
Hospital, 6777 W. Maple Road, west of
Drake.
In 1998, on the 30th anniversary of
her gold medal Olympic victory, Peggy
Fleming was diagnosed with breast
cancer. Facing what she calls "another
Olympics, a life Olympics," she under-
went surgery and treatment; is cancer-
free today. She has since become an

Walden, Tanuga, the JCC, Willoway,
Maplehurst, Seagull, Camp Ramah and
Summer Impressions. The Friendship
Circle is also participating.
Tickets cost $25 per person or $100
for a family of five. Raffle tickets are
$36 each, three for $100 or 20 for
$500. Raffle prizes will include gift
certificates to Tamakwa, Tamarack and
Walden, among other prizes. An auc-
tion of family- and kid- friendly prizes
will take place during the event.

entire family — for several generations
even': says Rachel Zimmerman, a Camp
Hermelin co-chair. "This is a wonder-
ful opportunity to have a conversation
with your kids about the importance of
giving back. To empower people to suc-
ceed is the best goal there is:'
Lunch will be served camp-style.
Participants are not allowed to drive
directly to the Hermelin home;
Tamarack Camps is providing buses to
take all guests to and from the event.

A patron-only VIP reception with
Fleming will be held at 10 a.m. The event
will feature a special silent auction for
a dress (valued at $3,800) donated by
designer Naeem Khan. There also will be
boutique shopping.
Francee Ford and Micki Kline of West
Bloomfield and Florine Mark and Lisa
Lis of Farmington Hills are event co-
chairs. Irma Elder, Stephanie Battershall
and Elle Elder are patron co-chairs.
Tickets for the luncheon are $100.
