unique aspect of our trip. They helped show us
Israel from their viewpoint; and, in return, we
gave them insight into how Americans live.
Now that I have returned, I have been partici-
pating in more Jewish organized events through
Hillel of Metro Detroit and Federation's Young
Adult Division. Israel did teach me a lot about
Judaism, the culture and the history; but with
each day, I am continuously learning.
I recommend this trip to all people interested
in learning more about Israel and themselves.
I'm glad I went and know my experience will
stay with me for my lifetime. @

about their culture and touring all the historic
sites that help establish Israel's unity.
In addition to learning about the history,
I learned a lot from our staff: Neil Cantor,
HMD's director of Jewish Student Life; Rabbi
Daniel Schwartz of Temple Shir Shalom in West
Bloomfield; and our Israeli tour guide Sara
Salzer, who knew more about Israel than I
thought possible. We had a medic/armed guard
named Parag as well as Lazzar, our bus driver.
Without these five people, the trip would not
have been the same.
In addition to the 40 Detroiters, there were
eight Israelis from Federation's Partnership 2000
region in the Central Galilee. The Israelis were
with us the entire time, which was another
