ach summer, approximately 15

Jewish undergraduate and gradu-
ate students from Metro Detroit
experience a unique and exciting

eight-week paid summer internship through the
Jeanette and Oscar Cook Occupational Intern

counselor at the Southfield-based JVS. The fifth
day, program participants attended a seminar
focused on learning about the services of the
local agencies.
"The weekly seminar days we all spent
together have been a great place to bond with
each other and meet some great leaders in the
Detroit Jewish community," Goodman said.
Rebecca Putney, a U-M business student,
said that through visiting the different Jewish
organizations each week she has "gained a
greater understanding of how amazing and
lucky we are as a Jewish community to have so
many exceptional Jewish agencies in our area."

(JOIN) program.
"Being a JOIN intern has been an amazing
experience," said Shayna Goodman, a University
of Michigan senior. "I have learned so much
about myself and where my future career aspi-
rations lie."
Rita Yarber, a junior at Wayne State University,
agrees. "I had such an incredible
experience this summer. I got to
work in the exact setting I would
love to work in when I get my
degree."
In addition to invaluable
experience at their individual job
placements, the interns also made
lasting friendships and networked
with many influential people in
the area.
"Interns worked four days out
of the week at a Jewish com-
munal service agency as para-
professionals," said Debra Silver,

SMART
CHOICE

Samantha Cutler, a U-M psychology and
Judaic studies major, recommends this intern-
ship to all students considering working in the
fields of nonprofit business administration,
marketing and communications, research and
program planning, human services, community
relations or human resources or even those sim-
ply interested in learning more about the Jewish
community.
"It will open your eyes to a unique experi-
ence and give you insight into future career
options," she said.
Interns worked at JVS, Jewish Senior Life
of Metropolitan Detroit, Jewish Family Service
of Metropolitan Detroit, the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit,
JARC and more.
"The program is designed to pro-
vide a professional and educational
experience for participants," Silver
said.
"I loved my internship this sum-
mer," Cutler said. "I wouldn't trade
the experience for anything."

These are just a few of the very smart students (with

stellar high school CPAs to show for it) who chose

Western Michigan University. Their reasons are as varied
as the degrees they're pursuing—one of the nation's

oldest honors colleges and a list of 230 great programs

from which to choose are just two. They found what they

were looking for at WMU.
