at camp, but the best part for her was
meeting some new friends among
both the Israeli and American kids.
"The counselors are very nice,
and you feel far more comfortable
to tell your story; you are not so
different',' she said.
The Israeli group was led by
Shlomi Nahumson of Herzliya,
who coordinates programming
for the IDF's Widows and Orphans
program. A big guy with a gentle
manner who clearly puts the kids
first, he says programs like this are
"really, really important."
"The kids need positive Israeli role
models and they need attention',' he
said. "At home, they accept for them-
selves the role of father, partner to
their mother and parent to the other
children. It's hare for some to agree to
go because they feel guilty for leaving
and having fun. This program gives
them three weeks of peace of mind.
They can share the weight they are
carrying and listen to others, but they
can also behave like kids."
He says the involvement of
American Jews helps the healing
process.
"Without the caring and sense of
responsibility of the American Jewish
community, this could not happen"
he said."You not only open your wal-
let; you open your homes and hearts.
It helps that they know that people on
the other side of the world care about
them."
Tamir Oppenheim, director of
FIDE in Michigan, agrees.
"Some of the kids told me they
didn't realize how much people
here love them and love the State
of Israel. For them, it was a proud
moment to understand that Israel
isn't just a small country in the
Middle East that no one cares
about."
With the right kind of financial
and volunteer support and the
buy-in of Tamarack Camps and the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, Oppenheim hopes that
in the future Detroit might host a
similar delegation of kids for their
entire visit to the States.
"This was an opportunity to take
part in a big mitzvah',' Oppenheim
said, expressing special thanks to
the host families. "I think it was
another opportunity for our com-
munity to show how strong we are
and how we stand together for the
Jewish people and Israel. We now
have 45 more great ambassadors
for Michigan in Israel."
