Beth El Slates Adult Ed
Learn Hebrew, explore Torah and expand
your knowledge of Jewish history and cus-
toms and learn music technique in Temple
Beth El's adult education classes which
begin Wednesday, Sept. 1, in Bloomfield
Township.
Lea Bearer, will teach two Hebrew class-
es: Advanced Hebrew, Wednesday morn-
ings at 10:30 a.m. and Conversational
Hebrew Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. Cost
of these 10-week classes is $50 for Temple
members and $75 for non-members.
Rabbinic Associate Keren Alpert will
lead a monthly Lunar Learn on selected
Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in the library and
a parallel brown bag lunch and learn on
selected Thursdays at noon in the temple's
Alpert Room. Sessions begin Oct. 6-7.
There is no charge for either the evening
or afternoon series.
Rabbi Daniel Syme and Rabbinic
Associate Keren Alpert will lead
"Introduction to Judaism", a 10-week
seminar for prospective converts, non-
Jewish partners of Jews,and Jews seek-
ing a better understanding of Judaism.
Couples are encouraged to take this semi-
nar together and will be charged only one
fee. The class will meet on Wednesdays
at 7 p.m. beginning Oct. 6. Cost is $75
for Temple members and $95 for non-
members.
Marla Aviva Bentley, cantorial asso-
ciate, will teach two classes. The first,
"Understanding Our Jewish Identity
Through Music" will be a three-part series
incorporating listening, discussion, lec-
ture, readings and active participation, to
help students gain a deeper understand-
ing of how music helps shape our Jewish
identity. The class, will meet on Oct. 20
and 27 and Nov. 3 at 7 p.m., and is open to
the community at no charge.
"Vocal Technique II", a continuation of
"Vocal Technique I", will focus on iden-
tifying and practicing the foundations
of proper vocal technique. Students will
learn vocal exercises, breathing techniques
and basic repertoire to perform for one
another. Participation in "Vocal Technique
I" is preferred but not required. The nine-
session class, which will meet on Tuesday
evenings at 6 p.m., beginning Oct. 5, is
limited to eight students. The fee is $50 for
members and $75 for non-members.
Keren Alpert will present the helpful
"Aliyahphobia or Help, I Can't Remember
How to Bless the Torah", a one-hour ses-
sion in which participants will learn how
to bless and dress the Torah and receive
hands-on training and a CD with the
blessings, along with copies of the bless-
ing in Hebrew and in transliteration. The
10:30 a.m. class on Sunday, Oct. 24, is per-
fect for those who have an upcoming bar

or bat mitzvah in the family. Cost of the
class $6.13 (for the 613 commandments).
On Wednesday mornings, beginning
Sept. 8 at 9:30 a.m., Lea Beurer will lead
an ongoing study of the Torah text. No
Hebrew reading is required. The charge for
this class is $35 for members and $50 for
non-members.

Temple Israel School Lineup
The Temple Israel Tyner Religious
school in West Bloomfield has new
offerings for 2010-2011.
• Sunday Bus from Huntington Woods
and Birmingham: Beginning this fall,
a Sunday morning bus is offered that
will make two stops, one in Huntington
Woods and the other in Birmingham, to
pick up students. There will be a nomi-
nal charge. This service will be offered
if 25 children sign up.
• Bar/Bat Mitzvah Boot Camp: Three
to five months prior to beginning bar/
bat mitzvah tutoring, students will take
a break from their regular Hebrew Class
and will participate in a prayer readi-
ness program. Students will review the
Hebrew prayers that they will be leading
during the service as well as engaging
in a general Hebrew reading review.
• Pre-Kindergarten-3rd Grade: A
pre-kindergarten through third-grade
program will be held at Temple Israel on
Sunday mornings from 9:40 a.m.-noon.
Students will engage in hands-on, fun-
filled lessons in Hebrew and Judaica.

New options this fall will include
fourth-sixth grade Flexible Hebrew
Options.
• Sunday and mid—week Hebrew:
4:30-6:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday
at the temple and 4:30- 6:30 p.m.
Wednesday at Seaholm High School in
Birmingham.
• Accelerated Hebrew Program:
Sundays and Tuesdays only
• One day a week Hebrew Program:
Sunday only from 8:30 a.m.-12:10 p.m.
• Sunday and Home Tutoring
Program.
• Sunday breakfast with the Bennetts:
Join Rabbi Bennett for bagels, juice,
and coffee on Sunday mornings from
8:40-9:40 a.m. This will be ideal for
those families who are dropping their
fourth-sixth grade children off at the
JCC for the early morning Sunday
Hebrew Program.

JCC Gottlieb Film Fest
The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit will host the 2010
Stephen Gottlieb Festival of the Arts
(FOA) from Aug. 31 to Sept. 5 at the JCC,
6600 W. Maple, West Bloomfield.
The event, with the theme of "Mind,
Body and Soul: will include workshops,
lectures and events, many of which are
free, that celebrate music, literature, dance,
travel, the fine arts and more. Included
will be a presentation by Steven L. Pease,
author of The Golden Age of Jewish

Achievement on Tuesday, Aug. 31, and
another with Joel Chasnoff, comedian and
author of The 188th Crybaby Brigade: A
Skinny Kid from Chicago Fights Hezbollah
on Wednesday, Sept. 1; a showing of the
award-winning Israeli film Lost Islands on
Thursday, Sept. 2; a nuno felting workshop
on Thursday, Sept. 2; a cooking demon-
stration on Wednesday, Sept. 1; and a shoe
fashion show on Tuesday, August 31.
