Water Source

Delivery service fulfills many purposes.

onah Lehmann, a 26-year-
old man with autism, finally
has work that makes sense.
Since last September, this West
Bloomfield resident has been deliver-
ing bottled water to homes and offices
in many parts of Oakland county.
None of this would be happen-
ing, however, without the support
of Jonah's home manager, Darlene
Mantua.
Jonah, who is nonverbal and
requires round-the-clock supervision,
relies on Darlene to organize orders
with other home staff and oversee
delivery.
"It is a team effort',' she says, one
that has resulted in a short, but grow-
ing list of customers, most of them
personal friends of Jonah's parents,
Annie and Michael Lehmann of West
Bloomfield. If demand grows, the hope
is that other individuals with disabili-
ties will be able to share in the work.
Water delivery by Jonah was his
mother's idea.
"I was picking up bottled water at
the warehouse club and realized that
if I hate all the heavy lifting so do
others," she said, adding that Jonah
always liked going to warehouse
clubs because of the free food he gets
to sample and the many packaged
products he recognizes from food
magazines.
To get the word out, Annie
Lehmann posted signs around West
Bloomfield and set up a website, www.
jonahswater.com . How it works is that
interested customers go to the website
and download an order form, send it
in with payment and expect delivery
within a few days.
There is no added charge above and
beyond the cost of the water, although
tips are appreciated especially given

making delivery

the cost of gas. Jonah does the heavy
lifting and leaves deliveries either at
the front door or at the garage.
Because orders are prepaid, cus-
tomers do not have to be home for
delivery.
"The best part': Annie Lehmann
says, "is that people are becoming
reacquainted with my son. Friends call
when he drops off a delivery to say
just how great he looks or how well he
seems to be doing."
The money Jonah makes each
month, about $20-$30, helps pay for
gas and some of the magazines he
loves. But the best part, she says, is
that her son is doing meaningful work
by providing a service that customers
appreciate.
