Over-bites
Ask the Orthodontist
The term over-bite refers to the amount of vertical overlap of the front teeth. Too
much, or insufficient over-bite can cause problems. The mal-occluslon known
as over-bite deserves attention because it can potentially interfere with speaking,
swallowing, chewing foods and often considered a cosmetic concern as well.
Excessive over-bite, or a deep bite, Is too much overlap of the front teeth. A
parent noticing that the lower front teeth are not visualized very much when the
teeth are closed together can detect this. This situation means excessive f
from biting, is conveyed to the front teeth (which are smaller than the back
and not designed to take that force). This can lead to excessive wear, fracturing
and chipping of teeth, and may even predispose the individual to future TMD,
which are jaw joint difficulties. Sometimes the over-bite may be so deep that
The lower front teeth actually reach the roof of the mouth which can lead toward
other problems. This is referred to as a deep impinging over-bite.
