"Even with a lack of education,
Lincoln was able to overcome that
handicap and become a great lead-
er. He had an excellent capacity to
read and absorb and he was prob-
ably the best writer in the history
of our presidency."
McGovern dispelled the myth
that Lincoln quickly wrote the
famous Gettysburg Address on
the back of an envelope, saying he
"worked hard for a long time on
the speech, going over every word,
then delivered the talk in only 21/2
minutes?'

Still Active
Having been named director of
the worldwide Food for Peace
program under President John
F. Kennedy in 1960, McGovern
still maintains a strong interest
in nutrition and education for
youngsters, and says he's striv-
ing to help "every hungry school
child in the world." In a bipartisan
effort, he and former Republican
Sen. Robert Dole of Kansas
worked on school lunch programs
globally and were named Food
Prize Laureates for their endeav-
ors.
President Obama recently sent
McGovern on a two-week, fact-
finding trip to Africa, where, in
many villages, "it was hard to find
anyone alive between the ages
of 20-45," McGovern intoned,
"because of the persistent AIDS
epidemic. All you see are grand-
parents raising little children
because their parents died of
AIDS. And it's tough to swallow
AIDS pills with food when the
person is starving?'
After the speech, Bud Sherbow
of Oak Park said, "he's an hon-
est man and you can tell he has a
great feeling for people'
Added Claire Horton of Berkley:
"He really touched my heart."
Turning to McGovern at the
podium, Rabbi Syme asked the
last question of the evening: "100
years from now, what do you think
people will say about George
McGovern?"
McGovern replied: "When I
began my career, I made a pledge
to myself to always be honest
with everyone. I hope people will
say he was an honest man who
never spoke falsely or harshly of
anyone?'
The response drew a standing
ovation. ❑
