Jewish community offers spring break
for high school seniors.

I

n April 2011, dozens of Jewish high
school seniors from Metro Detroit
will spend their spring break trip
working to make the world a better
place.
Thanks to a grant from Federation's
Stephen H. Schulman Millennium
Fund, Jewish teens will participate in
the inaugural "Party Later, Save the
World Now!" Alternative Spring Break.
Chaired by Rabbi Josh Bennett
from Temple Israel in West Bloomfield
and Eric Adelman, director of West
Bloomfield-based Michigan BBYO, and
coordinated by the Youth Professionals
Council (YPC), this trip will enable
seniors to have a meaningful spring
break experience.
"As concerned Jewish communal
leaders:' Adelman said, "we felt it
vital to provide an alternative to the
drunken bacchanalia that permeates
the 'typical' spring break trip."
Adelman is incoming YPC chair.
"By joining with the other Jewish
teen movements in Detroit, and
thanks to the support of the Schulman
Committee, we are able to provide a
meaningful, fun experience to Jewish
high school seniors," Adelman added.
"Party Later, Save the World Now"
will take teens to Panama or Belize
from April 3-10 for a week of Jewish
learning and community service, in
addition to relaxing time spent on the

beach and seeing the
sights.
Costs are being
finalized, but will
be equivalent to or
less than the "typi-
cal" spring break trip
AP
(around $1,500 inclu- Rabbi Bennett
sive of airfare).
"This is a chance to
send a strong Jewish
message to our high
school youth com-
munity and their
families," said Rabbi
Bennett, YPC chair.
Eric Adelman
"There is another
option that is more in line with Jewish
values and tradition. By using spring
break as a time to participate in tik-
kun olam (repair of the world), we are
doing the right thing! And by the way
... it is going to be a blast!" ❑
