Business & Professional
Activist Of Year
JCRC honors Roz Blanck
for her volunteer efforts.
R
oz Blanck of Franklin
has been named Activist
of the Year by the Jewish
Community Relations Council for her
"continuous and consistent dedica-
tion and involvement to the Detroit
Jewish community."
Blanck will be
honored at 7:30
p.m. Tuesday, May
25, at the Jewish
Community Center
in West Bloomfield.
Mitch Albom,
internationally
known bestselling
Roz Blanck
author, journalist,
screenwriter, play-
wright, radio and
television broad-
caster and musician,
will be the featured
speaker for the
event.
Blanck has spear-
Mitch Albom
headed two of the
Detroit community's
most successful grassroots vol-
unteer efforts, Penny Harvest and
Bookstock, events where she serves
as a co-chair.
"As someone who has volunteered
with Roz for ORT and Bookstock,
I can vouch that she always brings
her total commitment, high prin-
ciples, compassion and drive to any
cause she champions:' says Beverley
Katz, co-president of ORT America
Michigan Region.
Blanck's passion for literacy and
education led her to fill the void left by
the Brandeis Book Sale by establish-
ing Bookstock, the area's largest used
book and media sale. She remains an
advisory co-chair of Bookstock, which
to date has raised more than $430,000
for literacy and education programs
throughout Metro Detroit and engages
11 communal agencies and more than
700 volunteers annually.
Blanck also is co-president of
the David Horodoker Organization,
a trustee of the Jewish Women's
Foundation and secretary of the
Oak Park Business and Education
Alliance. She is associate chair of the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit's culture and group services
committee and a member of its allo-
cations steering committee.
Additionally, Blanck is a board
member for the JCRC, the Federation
Women's Department and Jewish
Senior Life of Metropolitan Detroit.
She has served as a local board mem-
ber of Federation, Fresh Air Society,
Jewish Apartments and Services and
JVS. She was a vice president of the
National Council of Jewish Women/
Greater Detroit Section.
Blanck's passion for giving back
to the community initially devel-
oped during her junior year at the
University of Michigan, where she
began an internship with the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
through the Jeanette and Oscar Cook
Jewish Occupational Intern Program
of JVS.
She later spent two summers
interning for the National Council
of Senior Citizens in Washington.
Upon graduating from Michigan in
1978 with a law degree, Blanck began
working at Federation while also
practicing law with a local firm.
The Bloomfield Township-based
JCRC is the public affairs voice for
the local Jewish community. Since
2001, it has named one volunteer
annually as its "Activist of the Year."
"The Jewish Community Relations
Council is privileged to honor some-
one like Roz Blanck," said Robert
Cohen, its executive director. "She's
one-of-a-kind; and anyone who
knows her, knows that she deserves
this recognition:'
Blanck and her husband, Stanford,
have three children: Lisa, Adam and
Jenna.
Jodi and Rob Goodman and Betsy
and Jeffrey Heuer are honorary co-
chairs of the Activist event. To recog-
