,11=1 , ■■•■ Business & Professional Activist Of Year JCRC honors Roz Blanck for her volunteer efforts. R oz Blanck of Franklin has been named Activist of the Year by the Jewish Community Relations Council for her "continuous and consistent dedica- tion and involvement to the Detroit Jewish community." Blanck will be honored at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. Mitch Albom, internationally known bestselling Roz Blanck author, journalist, screenwriter, play- wright, radio and television broad- caster and musician, will be the featured speaker for the event. Blanck has spear- Mitch Albom headed two of the Detroit community's most successful grassroots vol- unteer efforts, Penny Harvest and Bookstock, events where she serves as a co-chair. "As someone who has volunteered with Roz for ORT and Bookstock, I can vouch that she always brings her total commitment, high prin- ciples, compassion and drive to any cause she champions:' says Beverley Katz, co-president of ORT America Michigan Region. Blanck's passion for literacy and education led her to fill the void left by the Brandeis Book Sale by establish- ing Bookstock, the area's largest used book and media sale. She remains an advisory co-chair of Bookstock, which to date has raised more than $430,000 for literacy and education programs throughout Metro Detroit and engages 11 communal agencies and more than 700 volunteers annually. Blanck also is co-president of the David Horodoker Organization, a trustee of the Jewish Women's Foundation and secretary of the Oak Park Business and Education Alliance. She is associate chair of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's culture and group services committee and a member of its allo- cations steering committee. Additionally, Blanck is a board member for the JCRC, the Federation Women's Department and Jewish Senior Life of Metropolitan Detroit. She has served as a local board mem- ber of Federation, Fresh Air Society, Jewish Apartments and Services and JVS. She was a vice president of the National Council of Jewish Women/ Greater Detroit Section. Blanck's passion for giving back to the community initially devel- oped during her junior year at the University of Michigan, where she began an internship with the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit through the Jeanette and Oscar Cook Jewish Occupational Intern Program of JVS. She later spent two summers interning for the National Council of Senior Citizens in Washington. Upon graduating from Michigan in 1978 with a law degree, Blanck began working at Federation while also practicing law with a local firm. The Bloomfield Township-based JCRC is the public affairs voice for the local Jewish community. Since 2001, it has named one volunteer annually as its "Activist of the Year." "She's one-of-a-kind; and anyone who knows her, knows that she deserves this recognition:' Blanck and her husband, Stanford, have three children: Lisa, Adam and Jenna.
