heodore Petok,
93, of Rockville,
Md., winner of
an Academy Award for the
animated film The Crunch
Bird, died April 20, 2010.
Ted, to everyone who
knew him, grew up in
Ted Petok
Detroit, the oldest son of
Harry and Jenny Petok. He
graduated from Central High School.
His early career included a stint in
New York, where he tried his hand at
drawing single panel cartoons for pub-
lications such as Boys Life and similar
magazines. It was a tough way to earn
a living so he returned to Detroit and
went to work for Jam Handy film pro-
ductions in 1935.
As World War II broke out, he
entered the Army and was assigned
to the Signal Corps. While serving in
Europe in Gen. Omar Bradley's com-
mand, he did cartoons for Stars and
Stripes newspaper and was discharged
with the rank of captain.
On his return to Detroit, he mar-
ried Dorothy Soltar in 1946, opened a
studio on Broadway and began to do
commercial art. When television cre-
ated a market for animated advertising,
Ted jumped in. His clients included
Speedway Gasoline, Michigan Milk
Producers and Faygo soft drinks. At one
point, he flirted with moving to a bigger
studio in Los Angeles; but after a visit
to the West Coast realized that working
for someone else wasn't his cup of tea.
In addition to creating advertising in
Detroit he went back to his roots as a
cartoonist, creating a Tom Swifties strip
that ran in the Free Press.
JULIE ELDER, 58, of West Bloomfield,
died April 22, 2010.
She is survived by her son, Benjamin
Elder of Wolverine Lake; brothers and
sister-in-law, James Wagner of Dayton,
Ohio, Donald and Dottie Wagner of West
Bloomfield; many other loving family
members and friends.
Mrs. Elder was the dear sister of the
late Nancy Wagner.
Interment at the Clover Hill Park
Cemetery in Birmingham. Contributions
may be made to JARC or to a charity of
one's choice. Arrangements by Dorfman
Chapel.
FRANKLIN GETTLESON, 73, of
Bloomfield Hills, died April 24, 2010. He
was an attorney.
Mr. Gettleson is survived by his
daughters and son-in-law, Michelle
Gettleson of Waterford, Robin Gettleson
In 1971, during a slow
period, Ted and two col-
laborators, Len Maxwell
and Joe Petrovich, put their
talents together to create
a two-minute 15-second
animated short subject, The
Crunch Bird. At the prod-
ding of friends in the local
movie business, the film
was entered in the Academy Awards
competition. Ted was listed as the pro-
ducer and when the Bird was nomi-
nated for best animated short subject
of 1971, he went to Hollywood for the
Academy Awards. Clearly surprised
at the victory, he made an acceptance
speech that was almost as long as the
film itself.
Always a fan of magic, in his later
years he joined the Ring, a brother-
hood of magicians and attended
their meetings in the Detroit area.
He delighted in performing sleight
of hand for his friends, children and
grandchildren.
Mr. Petok is survived by his sons
and daughters-in-law, Dr. William and
Barbara Petok of Maryland, Fred and
Marsha Petok of Maryland; grand-
children, Benjamin Petok and Jessica
Simon and Alison Petok; sisters, Lillian
Israel and Goldie Rothenberg; brother,
Samuel Petok; nieces and nephews.
Mr. Petok was the beloved husband
of the late Dorothy Petok.
Interment at Beth El Memorial Park.

and daughter-in-law, Scott and Jennifer
Gettleson of Illinois; grandchildren,
Ramona Bea Whitten Gettleson,
Gabrielle Gettleson and Olivia Gail
Whitten Gettleson; sister and brother-
in-law, Lorraine and Irving Merkovitz.
He was the beloved husband of the
late Gail M. Gettleson; the devoted son
of the late Benjamin and the late Helen
Gettleson.
