Sinai
Director
D
r.
Julien Priver,
95, died April
22, 2010. He
was executive
director of
Sinai Hospital
of Detroit for Dr. Julien Priver
its 28 years.
Julien was born Nov. 8, 1914, the
younger of two boys, to Bertha and
Charles Priver in New York City.
He attended DeWitt Clinton High
School followed by an undergradu-
ate degree from City College of New
York. He graduated medical school at
the University of Western Ontario in
London in 1940.
In August 1941, he married Doris
McCorquodale R.N., a native of
Embro, Ont., whom he met during
medical school. They resided in
upstate New York where Julien pur-
sued a possible career in epidemiol-
ogy. Following the onset of WWII,
Julien enlisted in the Army and
saw duty in the Pacific under Gen.
Douglas MacArthur. His administra-
tive experiences in wartime provided
motivation to aim his career toward
hospital administration. Following
discharge from the Army in 1946,
he completed a residency in New
York and then accepted the position
of associate director of Mount Sinai
Hospital of New York.
In September 1951, Julien was
appointed executive director of
the newly opened Sinai Hospital of
Detroit, a position he would occupy
until his retirement in 1979. During
his illustrious career, he served a
term as president of the Michigan
Hospital Association in 1969. In
addition, he oversaw the evolution
of Sinai Hospital into one of the
Midwest's finest and most honored
of medical institutions. Under his
guidance, Sinai Hospital trained
hundreds of physicians who would
go forth with distinction as caregiv-
ers to many thousands of patients
throughout the United States.
Julien is survived by two sons,
David, born 1943, and Douglas,
born 1947, as well as two grand-
sons, Mark, born 1973, and Steven,
born 1976. He was predeceased by
wife, Doris, who died in 2003.
