David on Elmhurst, now New Mount
Zion Missionary Baptist Church; and
B'nai Moshe on Dexter, now St. Paul
A.M.E. Zion Church.
The first example of Detroit Jews
and Christians purchasing build-
ings from each other was in 1862,
when Congregation Shaarey Zedek
purchased St. Matthew's Episcopal
Colored Church on East Congress.
Two of the buildings were designed
by famed Detroit architect Albert
Kahn. Beth El was built in 1922 and
Shaarey Zedek in 1932. B'nai Moshe

erected its building in 1929, and
B'nai David was built in 1928.
The tour was organized by Arnie
Collens, JHSM president, and Mike
Kasky, who has conducted tours for
the Grosse Pointe Jewish community.
The bus leaves from Shaarey
Zedek, 27375 Bell Road, Southfield.
Meet in the lobby at 9:45 a.m.
Thursday, April 22. Lunch is pro-
vided. The tour ends at 3 p.m. Cost is
$32 for JHSM members; $40 for non-
members. Call the JHSM office, (248)
432-5517, to reserve space. ❑
