Kaline, Greenberg Team Up
Two Tiger legends: "Big Al" to be honoree at the "Hammerin' Hank" golf tourney.
S
ome time ago, it was just an idea
... "Maybe yes and maybe no"
could be the answer back ...
Then, crossed fingers and wet palms later,
came the answer.
Yes, he said, which to those involved was
like someone had hit a home run to win a
World Series.
Al Kaline will be the 2010 superstar
Lifetime Achievement Award recipient for
this year's 20th Annual Hank Greenberg
Memorial Golf Invitational at the Oakland
Hills Country Club, Monday, June 28 ...
It brings together two very high sports
profiles as well
as the bevy of
sports celebrities
surely to attend
in his honor.
Kaline's Major
League Baseball
Hall of Fame
years as an out-
standing Detroit
Tiger outfielder
and excellent
human being
have been chron-
Al Kaline
icled many times
... Oakland
Hills in Bloomfield Township, likewise, is
the site of golfing greatness with its his-
tory of PGA, U.S. Open and Ryder Cup
championship tournaments ... The event
is a benefit for the Michigan Jewish Sports
Foundation.
Kaline, whose reputation spanned 22
seasons, 1953-1974, as one of the best
all-around ballplayers in the history of the
game, was honored and pleased to accept the
invitation from Steve Greenberg, Hanks son.
"I'm a golf junkie," Kaline, a member of
Oakland Hills Country Club,
has many times acknowledged.
"I love it. I love to play com-
petitively"
Having Al Kaline as its
honoree this year is a most
fitting choice ... He and
Hank Greenberg certainly
epitomize the enormity of
Detroit's legendary baseball
franchise.
DANDY DINING DEAL
... Two discounts on one of
the better pieces around of broiled fresh
whitefish ... 10-12-ounces that regu-
larly sells for $11.95, a bargain in itself,
at RJ's American Grille, Northwestern
Hwy., Farmington Hills, is $10.95
through April ... And also, any RJ's
coupon will be accepted, too, making
the price even lower ... On the broiled
whitefish plate is mashed or fried pota-
toes or white rice deliciously mixed
with pine nuts, and carrots and steamed
broccoli ... the double discount is cer-
tainly a wonderful way to have folks try
the whitefish at RJ's.
GOOD SERVER DEPT. ... Sandy
Waple, McVee's, Telegraph, between 9
and 10 Mile, Southfield ... A personality
that customers enjoy with her cordial
and efficient attention to their order and
satisfaction.
GALS RESPONSIBLE for the
Passover Mandelbrot at Vineyards,
Northwestern Hwy., between 14 Mile
and Middlebelt, Farmington Hills, are
Kinan Zea and Ferial Halawi ... Their
delicious mandelbread treats are made
with cherries, cranberries and walnuts,
using matzah meal instead of flour and
vegetable oil rather than butter ... A
very tasty Passover substitute
that to a lot of folks is more
savory than the regular one
made with flour.
THE MAIN COURSE was
Atlantic Salmon ... He was in
the mood for something else,
maybe an extra well-done
hamburger, his first food love
... He even opted to have a
peanut butter and jelly sand-
wich, but settled for a dish of
pasta and side of olive oil.
Salmon, to his mother-in-law Mona
Rappaport's dining delight, may have
been the main course for dinner, but
Barry Solomon was indirectly involved
in something that came after dinner ...
and was a big hit of the evening ... His
wife, Linda Solomon, was the keynote
speaker at Trade Secrets by JVS Women
at Birmingham's Townsend Hotel and
she brought standing-ovation roars of
approval with
her stirring
address.
Linda's talk
was much more
than a speech
... It was a ter-
rific combina-
tion of inspira-
tion, courage,
wit, humor,
personal recol-
lections and so
much more all
rolled up into
wowing a highly
Linda Solomon
appreciative
audience of more than 300 women and
a smattering of men ... Proof that this
young lady with the beautiful long flow-
ing hair is much more than a fine celeb-
rity photographer, journalist, author, etc.
... She spoke as only a very devoted and
deep-feeling person could.
"I wish I had hair like Linde said
former TV newscaster Lila Lazarus,
short-haired mistress of ceremonies and
a very good result-getting auctioneer
... She and WDIV-TV's lovely and tal-
ented Ruth Spencer also joined Linda
in elegant words about the late TV pro-
ducer Dell Warner ... Barbara Beren,
2010 Women To Work honoree, was an
example of women who, with JVS' aid,
are given the spirit to rise from depths
of despair ... Barbara told of being
divorced and alone with three children,
no money and no future outlook. But —
with the help of JVS Women — she has
risen now to become a successful career
woman and entrepreneur ... So many
others, from the group's head Barbara
Nurenberg on down to a very precious
many gals, do so much in JVS' wonder-
ful Women to Work program in assisting
lassies get a new start in life.
Yes, Barry polished off his plate of
pasta, and most of the crowd still hung
around to move their mouths, too ... in
much praise for Linda's speech.
CONGRATS ... To Judy Horowitz on
her birthday ... To Marvin Slof on his
82nd birthday ... To Gary Wine on his
57th birthday ... To Nancy Braun on
her 65th birthday ... To Lou and Evelyn
Grant on their 60th anniversary ... To
Matt and Lisa Prentice on their 26th
anniversary. ❑
