f there is a silver lining to the unem-
ployment crisis, it's that people are
reinventing themselves. They are
seeking out opportunities that will not
only provide income, but also offer per-
sonal satisfaction perhaps not found in
previous jobs.
Whether through job loss, underem-
ployment or simply career burn-out, more
and more folks are honing untapped skills
and abilities to pursue new careers. For
Gabin Hertz, owner of the Relax the Back
franchise in Bloomfield Township, neces-
sity is actually the mother of re-invention.
Hertz, 39, of Southfield moved to Metro
Detroit from his native Hungary with

his family when he was 8 years old. After
graduating from Yeshiva Beth Yehudah
for grade school and Akiva Hebrew Day
School for high school, both now in
Southfield, he earned a bachelor's degree
in corporate finance from Michigan
State University and an MBA from Walsh
College, Troy.
He began working in insurance sales
and followed with a successful and lucra-
tive career in the mortgage business. He
worked his way up to become the regional
vice president for a national mortgage
company, responsible for a five-state ter-
ritory with 50 direct reports. Yet with his
growing success, the demands of his job
were taking a toll.
