I
n a first-ever event, students
from the Frankel Jewish
Academy and Hillel Day School
of Metropolitan Detroit teamed up
for a three-game basketball tourna-
ment reuniting former classmates and
strengthening the bonds between the
two schools.
Eleven teams, consisting of two
FJA students and one Hillel student,
played their first two games at Hillel
in Farmington Hills. The March
5 final, played in FJA's gym at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield, concluded Hillel's Spirit
Week. Hillel's seventh and eighth
grades cheered their teams.
FJA Admissions Director Anne Van
Prooyen and associate Linda Baruch
worked with Michael Sandweiss, FJA's
athletic director, and Hillel coaches
Brad Freitag and Nicole Miller to coor-
dinate the trio of lunchtime games.
"I'd wanted to do this for some
time now',' Van Prooyen said. "It was
gratifying to see the mentshlekiet as
our boys created their teams, taking
into account individual strengths and
height, pairing strong players with
those less experienced on the court."
"It's been a lot of fun, "said FJA
sophomore Josh Sider, who took a

leadership role in the event with class-
mates Alex Vieder and Robbie Simons.
"It was a fun way to show the Hillel
kids what our school is all about and
work with my friends to make it hap-
pen',' Sider said.
Coach Freitag said the games
reunited former schoolmates, too.
"It's very exciting for the students
who knew each other here at Hillel,
and even played on sports teams
together, to enjoy the friendly compe-
tition," he said.
"The games have been wonder-
ful:' said Hillel's Coach Miller. "Our
staff was so excited to see how much
[their former students] have grown.
Everything just fell into place and we
hope to make this a Hillel-FJA tradi-
tion?'
"It was a great experience said
eighth-grader Brain Langnas, who
represented Hillel on the winning
team.
The games enable Hillel students to
sample an aspect of FJA's high school
sports program, making friends in the
process. "FJA has a lot to offer:' said
Sandweiss. "Sometimes, families don't
realize the breadth of FJA's athletics
program. We plan on a similar tourna-
ment for girls in the near future?' _1
