others and won every battle.
"When I was starting my
career, she coached me to per-
severe, to keep submitting my
photos, to compile my photo
essays into books and to keep
submitting them for publica-
tion no matter how many
rejections I received. I listened
to her and wound up on the
New York Times bestseller list."
Berent also learned that
same resolve. "JVS changed my
life forever;' she says. "While
I was saying 'I can't. I won't. I
shouldn't, my JVS counselor
said, 'Try. You can. You will!
"JVS never wavered from the
commitment to help me real-
ize my true potential. Where
I had given up years ago, they
breathed new life into me, took
me by the hand and, with a
leap of faith, helped me find a
part-time job I could handle.
We took those first steps
together as I began to walk my
way into my work life."
"The workforce has changed
significantly since many of
these women last worked: says
Elaine Fieldman, vice-chair of
the JVS Board of Trustees and
a co-chair of the event. "We're
proud 85 percent of the women
enrolled in the program have
jobs or are in training when
they complete the program!'
Nurenberg says, "Because
women throughout
Southeastern Michigan are
being forced to re-enter the
workforce at higher rates than
ever before, the demand for
JVS' services has grown. Not
only do they feel unsure of
themselves and isolated from
the world of work, but they
are unemployed in the worst
economy in the nation."

Temple Israel's Robert Sosnick Family Life
Center is sponsoring a free presentation by
Kimberly Kassner, author of You're a Genius
