help the family," said Rabbi Yedwab.
"I couldn't be prouder of the teen-
agers in this community. But for five
years before that, the Federation had
been paying for their Jewish educa-
tion in our school. Evan and Emily
Fischer had already been recipients
of a Jewish education made possible
entirely by the generosity of our
donors."

The Need To Recommit

Scott Kaufman, Federation chief
executive officer, cited the success
of Federation's Super Sunday event
on Jan. 24, which drew a 20 percent
increase in gifts, but "the challenge we
face now is if we don't recommit to our
Annual Campaign, things can go south
fast': he said.
"The community and its institu-
tions will fragment, and we will
cease to be that great central com-
munity we've been for generations!'
Citing that the 2010 Campaign has
raised $21.6 million and the Gilbert
Challenge Fund stands at $4.2 mil-
lion, Campaign co-chair Ron Klein,
of Bloomfield Hills said, "The needs
are accelerating dramatically"
"Detroit's Jewish community has
helped Jewish populations in need in
other areas like the Soviet Union, or
Ethiopia or Israel. Now we've come
full circle," he said.
"What we're talking about doing
now is helping ourselves in our com-
munity."
Invoking the Nike slogan,
Campaign co-chair Terri Farber
Roth of Farmington Hills told the
board to "just do it" and suggested
increasing their own gifts.
"I always think like I've made the
best gift that I can and then I think,

For years, Mufflers and More has
provided neighbors with HONEST,
DEPENDABLE, QUALITY informa-
tion, repair and service! They live here,
and it shows!

`Oh, God, what if this gift is the gift
that could change somebody's life'?"

Community Covenant

Those in attendance were encouraged
to sign a "Community Covenant" — a
pledge of support to stand together
with our community for the next 45
days to guarantee its preservation,
continue to maintain its health and
well being, keep it strong, vibrant and
ensure that No Family Stands Alone.
Leadership were asked to identify
ways in which they could help, from
fundraising to attending events as
Federation and community ambas-
sadors.
A host of other community mobi-
lization events will take place during
this 45-day period, culminating in
the first-ever on-line community
allocation program, an initiative to
allow community members to play
a role in the allocation process of
Federation raised funds to select
projects.
This first-time initiative will rein-
force Federation's role in bringing the
community together to fund Jewish
organizations and Jewish needs.
Other key programs include
phone-a-thons plus Women's
Department and Young Adult
Division events leading up to the
Campaign Countdown on March 15.
Urging the board to maximize
efforts, Kaufman said, "We're not
going to be able to cut our way to
prosperity.
"The only way we are going to get
past this is to grow our resources
through the Campaign." I_ I
