HAVEN is hosting an
event to celebrate the
commitment of pur-
pose that drives its vol-
unteers, who have been
Arlene Frank
combatting domestic
violence and sexual assault by building
violence-free communities one family at a
time for more than 30 years.
Arlene Frank is among those being
feted at the Celebration of Strength on
Thursday, Jan. 21.
Arlene Frank earned the Heart of
Haven Award. She is coordinator of the
Womencenter at Oakland Community
College, where she creates and directs
programs on a variety of topics of con-
cern to women. Along with other projects,
she directs the college's Sexual Assault
Awareness program, Assault Prevention
and Self Defense program, SAFE on
Campus program and Back to School day.
She regularly speaks to college lasses on
domestic violence.
She serves on the board of directors of
the National Council of Jewish Women/
Greater Detroit Section, currently chairing
the Teen Dating Abuse Awareness Project.
In addition to the individual awards,
two corporations, Chrysler Financial and
Verizon Wireless, will be recognized at the
event for their support of Haven's mis-
sion and messages.Verizon also funded
an instructional video for children titled
Daisy Tells A Secret and Chrysler Financial
was pivotal as a supporter of HAVEN's
annual fundraiser, Promenade of Hope.

Learn With Hadassah
Join the Greater Detroit Chapter of
Hadassah for a winter education series
on Tuesday, Feb. 2, with Ruth Bergman,
an instructor with Florence Melton Adult
Mini-School and Federation's Alliance for
Jewish Education.
On Tuesday, March 2, Dr. Pamela
Marcovitz, medical director of the
Ministrelli Women's Heart Center,
Beaumont Hospital will speak.
Each event begins at 11:30 a.m. with
a light lunch. They will be held at the
Sarah and Ralph Davidson Hadassah
House, 5030 Orchard Lake Road, West
Bloomfield.
The cost is $8 each session.
Reservations are required. Make checks

Women's Health Expo
Congregation Shir Tilcvah Sisterhood
will host health care professionals from
St. Joseph Mercy Oakland in Pontiac at a
Women's Health Expo on Thursday, Feb.
4, at the Troy synagogue.
The expo will begin at 5:30 p.m. with
blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol
screenings. Metabolic Nutrition and
Weight Management staff will offer
weight management information,
healthy food samples and a schedule of
future classes. The Michigan Bariatric
Institute will provide information on
bariatric surgery options.
The program will begin at 7 p.m. and
feature St. Joseph physicians and pro-
fessionals. Speakers include: Dr. Ethan
Goldstein on OB/GYN concerns; Dr.
Judie Goodman on women and cancer;
nurse Connie Parliament on women and
stroke; Dr. Varsha Revankar on wellness;
psychologist Yobany Pardo on stress,
anxiety and depression; and Dr. Nitin
Doshi on women and heart health.
The cost is $8. Checks payable to

ALS Hosts Celebration
The ALS Association, Michigan Chapter,
will host a free Research Update and
Celebration of Excellence Reception at
6-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, at Southfield
Public Library, 26300 Evergreen. Bill
Emerson, CEO of Quicken Loans will
be feted for his role as corporate chair,
2009 Detroit Walk to Defeat ALS.
Keynoters include Drs. Eva Feldman
on stem-cell research; Kirsten Gruis
M.D., of U-M's ALS Clinic; and Daniel
S. Newman, director, Hoenselaar ALS
Clinic, Henry Ford Hospital.

Toys For 'Kids'
Bloomfield Hills-based Hillside
Furniture participated in its annual
December charity event that benefited
Kids Kicking Cancer. When customers
made a purchase, they received a con-
siderable discount in exchange for an
unopened children's toy valued at $10
or more. Almost 100 toys were donated.
According to Jeff Selik, president
of Hillside Furniture, "Kids Kicking
Cancer eases the pain of very sick chil-
dren while empowering them to heal
physically, spiritually and emotionally.
We are so honored to be a part of that
process every year."
