F

ormer Detroiter Matthew
Berry is running for
Congress in Virginia's Eighth
District. He announced his candidacy
as a Republican on
Jan. 14. Democrat
Jim Moran now
holds the seat.
"In Washington
today, it seems that
the answer to every
problem is more,
more, more...
Matthew
more borrowing,
Berry
more spending,
and more government involvement
in more sectors of our economy" said
Berry, an Arlington resident. "With
unemployment at 10 percent and our
country on track to run up an addi-
tional $9 trillion in debt over the next
decade, the current approach is not
working and we must change course."
Berry is the son of Sharon and
Lawrence Berry and grandson of
Barbara and Harold Berry. The
Berry family has long been active in
the Detroit Jewish community and
at Congregation Shaarey Zedek of
Oakland County.
Matthew Berry, a Yale Law School
graduate, is a former general coun-
sel of the Federal Communications
Commission. He worked to accelerate
broadband deployment across the
nation, encourage greater competition
within the cable TV industry, safe-
guard consumer privacy and promote
use of communications technology to
improve public safety.
Berry has served as a law clerk to
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence
Thomas and Judge Laurence
Silberman of the U.S. Court of Appeals
for the D.C. Circuit. He worked on
counterterrorism policy at the U.S.
Department of Justice and defended
the constitutionality of school choice
programs at the Institute for Justice.
He served on the Arlington County
Human Rights Commission.
"Having worked on counterterror-
ism policy at the U.S. Department of
Justice Berry said, "I am well aware of
the fact that there are Islamic extrem-
ists plotting to inflict catastrophic
damage on our country, and that we
must not return to the pre-Sept. 11
mindset of treating terrorism primar-
ily as a law enforcement matter."
