Steve Jasgur gets hip-hop-y with Joe Cornell dance students who are
volunteering for the Joefs Crew leadership corps.
0
n top of weekly dance
classes, schoolwork, sports
and other extracurricu-
lar involvements, 52 sixth-graders
enrolled in Joe Cornell dance classes
have volunteered to participate in an
elite initiative called Joe's Crew.
These dynamic kids, bursting with
ideas, have decided to plan a dance-a-
thon fundraiser in January to benefit
Kids Kicking Cancer.
"When we came up with the idea
for Joe's Crew, to add a leadership
component to our dance program, I
figured if we got 10 kids, it would be
a success:' said Steve Jasgur, presi-
dent of Southfield-based Joe Cornell
Entertainment and co-owner with his
sister, Becca Schlussel.
"I am blown away by the turnout
and the dedication of these kids:'
he added. "They are so eager to help
those who need it. I'm so proud to
work with them on this."
The Joe's Crew Dance-a-Thon will
take place 6:30 8:30 p.m. Monday, Jan.
18, at Orchard Mall in West Bloomfield.
The event is open to the public; Orchard
Mall merchants will take part.
Participants have been getting
pledges from friends and family. They
will dance for 60 minutes straight to
fulfill their pledges. They are aiming
for a goal of $3,500.
"When a group of kids gets together,
they can make a big imprint on the
world:' said Rachel Wasserman, 12.
"Joe's Crew is doing that!"
"The dance-a-thon will be really fun

and helpful for Kids Kicking Cancer
because they're doing things hospitals
can't provide said Chloe Schwartz, 11,
a sixth-grader at Walnut Creek Middle
School. She lives in West Bloomfield.
"These kids feel pain every day;
we want to help ease their pain:' said
Zack Kirshner, 11 and a sixth-grader
at Hillel Day School. The Farmington
Hills resident's personal goal is to raise
$500.
Joe Cornell students who raise the
most money as well as the Joe Cornell
class that collectively raises the most
money will win prizes.
Since the 1950s, Joe Cornell
Entertainment (www.joecornell.com )
has been teaching middle-schoolers
the art of ballroom and line dancing.
Embedded in these weekly lessons are
subtle, but crucial messages about what
it means to be cool and how to confi-
dently interact with the opposite sex.
Research shows that children who
are taught etiquette and social graces
— which they learn in Joe Cornell
dance classes — are actually learning
kindness, responsibility and gentle-
ness, which will help them stand out
and succeed in an increasingly rude,
tumultuous world. That's evident in
the outpouring of student and paren-
tal support for Joe's Crew.
"We are so proud of our students:'
said Becca Schlussel. "We want the
kids who take our classes to walk away
with a hearty dose of self-confidence
and a healthy perspective on social
interaction."
