featured speaker at a
panel discussion host-
ed by Congregation

Beth Ahm in West
Cherry
Bloomfield on Sunday,
Jan. 10, at 2 p.m., reviewing his recent
investment mission to Israel on behalf of
the state of Michigan.
The event is titled "Michigan and
Israel: Partners in Building Bridges to a
Green Future' The program is free and
open to the community.
Cherry traveled to Tel Aviv in
November to present his "Green Jobs for
Blue Waters" initiative at the International
Water Technologies and Environmental
Control Exhibition. Two Israeli companies
directly involved in water resources tech-
nology made commitments to pilot proj-
ects in Michigan. Cherry also co-chaired
a Michigan-Israel joint task group meet-
ing that resulted in the formulation of
future economic development opportuni-
ties for Michigan.
Also on the Jan. 10 panel will be Scott
Kaufman, CEO of the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit, and Ron Perry,
executive director of Michigan Israel
Business Bridge.
The event is co-sponsored by Beth
Ahm, Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, Michigan Israel Business Bridge,
Jewish Community Relations Council
of Metropolitan Detroit and Michigan
Jewish Conference.

A Togetherness Shabbat
Families with children in grades K
through 7 are invited to Congregation
Beth Ahm in West Bloomfield on Shabbat
morning, Saturday, Jan. 16, for Shabbat
Metuka / A Sweet Shabbat, an informal
family Shabbat service that runs from
10:45 to 11:45 a.m., led by Beth Ahm
religious school students and Director of
Education, Youth & Family Programming
Amy Newman.
Shabbat Metuka gives parents, grand-
parents and other extended family mem-
bers the opportunity to daven with their
children and grandchildren, nieces, neph-
ews and cousins, in a relaxed Shabbat
atmosphere. All are welcome without
regard to affiliation.
Also happening at Beth Ahm on Jan.
16 is Birthday Shabbat, a new program
for children with birthdays in a given
month to receive a special birthday bless-
ing and gift from the congregation.

Hidary, the "Hebrew
Mamite on Friday,
Hidary
Jan. 15.
Hidary grew up on Manhattan's
culturally diverse Upper West Side. Her
experiences as a Sephardic Jew with
close friends from different ethnic and
religious backgrounds inspired her to
write Culture Bandit, a solo show that
chronicles her coming of age during the
golden age of Hip-Hop. She is dedicated
to fostering understanding and friend-
ship between people.
Following dinner, Hidary will pres-
ent "An Evening of Stories and Spoken
Word:'
Friday evening programming will
begin at 5 p.m. with Kabbalat Shabbat
services. At 5:45 p.m. preschool families
are invited to Shabbat Shaboom. A buffet
dinner is planned for 6:15 p.m.
Childcare will begin at 7 p.m. and
extend until the end of the adult pro-
gram. At 7:30, children will enjoy a pre-
sentation by Nelson, the Animal Guy.
Rabbi Aaron Bergman will conduct
a Talmud study session at 8:30 a.m. on
Shabbat morning, Jan. 16, titled "Jewish
Law on War: Which wars are permitted,
which are mandatory and which are
forbidden?"
Traditional services will begin at
9 a.m. At 10, Jewish educator Ruth
Bergman will hold a session,"Lilith:
Demon or Heroine? "At 10:30, there will
be drop-off youth services. After services
will be an enhanced kiddush.
SYNergy Shabbat Weekends were
developed to offer "something for
everyone" — a concept that encourages
individuals to enhance their celebration
of Shabbat with a variety of new, creative
Shabbat experiences instead of, or in
addition to, traditional services.
SYNergy co-chairs are Carol
Weintraub Fogel of West Bloomfield, and
Phyllis Pilcowitz of Bloomfield Hills.
The community is welcome to all of
the services and programs at no charge,
with the exception of the Shabbat dinner
for which there is a charge. Dinner reser-
vations are required by Friday, Jan. 8. Call
